Does anyone know a good way to cure shin splints, but still play DDR?

Stretching before you play can help. Playing on a softer surface, stomping less when you play. And taking a little more time off between sessions to let the muscles in your shins recover before you beat them into submission again.

The best stretch for shin splints is to lower your heel over the edge of a step and lift your toes. Make sure you hold onto something so that you don't slip and hurt yourself. Lowering your foot stretches your calf muscle and lifting your toe stretches your shin. You can bend the knee of the stretching leg and it will deepen the stretch. Here is a picture: www.exrx.net/Stretches/Gastrocnemius/Step.htmlIf you do this before and after your dancing, you should see results in a week or so. If not, you should see a doctor.

I've found a pretty cool way, I put my toes down, and stretch it forward if you know what I mean.

I used to get a variety of leg aches/pains which interrupted my DDR for days at at time until I got a "pad cover" for my soft Ignition pad, designed to let you play with shoes on. It's made a huge difference - no more aches/shin splits/shooting pains. You can get pad covers from RedOctane.

Hi.
I'm starting to develop Shin splints (anterior, meaning the outside edge of my leg) while playing DDR.
Last night I played a set of 6 songs on beginner mode (I use Stepmania and a bootleg Red Octaine pad) and I could barely walk after wards.
I'm even starting to develop them while normally walking.
Does anyone have any advice or should I seek the advice of a medical professional?

Hate to break it to ya, but you need to rest and not play till they go away or they will only get worse. Shin splints are caused by muscle strain that creates little micro-tears in those muscles, usually because those muscles have not been used for awhile...
Heat a couple times a day might help; but they will go away on their own once your muscle fibers 'repair' themselves and they can only do that with rest - it may take several days, even up to a week.
Bummer, I know.
Once you're over them, prevent them in the future by gradually building up your time and intensity. Always stretch them out before you play and after. Oh yeah, and make sure your shoes are giving you good support for for all that side-to-side movement!

I don't mean to basically shoot down everything everyone said, but when I developed my shin splints, I kept playing, and playing hard.
They went away.
And yes, they actually were shin splints.
Perhaps my complex and Genetically-altered healing cells fixed the job up nice. Ugh.

You're right. If you keep playing, your muscles will grow stronger and the pain will eventually go away.
The suggestions that we have here are to help prevent the pain or treat it if you already have it.

Ok. This is going to sound a bit 80's (and maybe you guys will be initially turned off by the idea) but something that has helped my shin splints is wearing legwarmers. They are not just a fashion item from when Flashdance was all the rage. The purpose of the legwarmer is to keep the joints and muscles from knee to ankle (sometimes above the knee too) warm and loose while the dancer is warming up. I've worn them to dance in and to play DDR in, and i notice a big difference between wearing them and not wearing them. They can also help for minor knee and ankle aches. If you stretch a lot and still end up with aches and pains between your knees and ankles, you might think about investing in a pair. Here's where i've bought them in the past: www.discountdance.com/frame_set.php3?mf=/dancewear/page_WU_p1.htmlYou can get them in all kinds of colors and lengths and most styles will fit well beneath a pair of sweat pants if you wouldn't be caught dead wearing them. I also swear by Tiger Balm and Aleve. Tiger Balm smells nasty but works wonders for aches and pains. UJKitten P.S. Feel free to make fun of me for this one. I don't care. What matters to me is less painful joints and muscles, particularly in the cold!!

Ok my friend suggested something to "cure" shin-splints, and to my surprise it kinda worked. It basically stretches the muscles.
Here is how you do it:
Get on your knees and put the top of your toes (toenails) on the ground. Then, sit back onto your heels and stretch, try to point your toes away from your butt as best you can. And also try to get the curved area where your foot meets your shin as close to the ground as you can, before it gets painful.
I am not sure if this only helped me, but try it, you never know.

I have now felt shin splints... and they suck. MAN do they suck! It's from when I thought I would be all "active" and friggin ran. I can't believe concrete is just that brutal! compared to my soft pad for sure... I was surprised my legs reacted as such. I am still playing DDR just fine but it's if I do something like kneel down and put pressure on my shins that I yelp in pain.

i think im developing this as well. my shins are killing me lately. and im starting to get minor bruising on my ankles. it hurts like a bitch, but sorry to say, i'm not gonna slow down on the DDR.
no pain, no gain.
ok, i know thats not true, you can get seriously hurt if you think that way. but in my situation, i'll deal with a bit of pain in my shins to shed some poundage!

Wow..
I never thought i'd have to experience shin splints. They just seemed like something I wouldnt get.
I just got them.. They hurt >.<
I've read up on them some, and i'm not quite sure.. Are these permanent, or just temporary?

Temporary. It's a muscle strength imbalance issue. They do fade in time.
