I got DDR towards the end of January, and I started off on beginner. I played that for less than I week. I played light mode for about a 3 weeks, then I AA'd every song (except the 10 footers, some of the 9) I've been playing standard for about 3 weeks, and I'm getting AA's on up to the 5-6 foot range. (BTW, I've played every day since I got Ultramix 2 for at least 20 mins-2 hours) What was your progress like? What tequinques did you use to advance? I tried plugging in my controller for about an hour to learn to read the steps... made it a lot easier. How bout you guys? Edit: Sorry if theres already a thread for this, if there is let me know

You said you've AA'ed every song, except 10 footers and some of the 9's... but you're only playing on Standard? I guarentee the only 7+ footers on Standard are the Max's, and the Paranoia Survivors, a few others. I took me probably about 2 weeks to get to standard, and a month to full blown get to heavy.

Umm... I don't get what you're talking about lol. Maybe I'm reading the rating system wrong or something... on U2 there's a different foot rating for each song based on each difficulity... IE, a 4 foot song on light could be a 6 on standard. That's how I understand it anyways. What I meant was I have AA's on all the songs on light except for some of the really intense ones rated 9-10 feet on light. Now I'm getting AA's on the songs rated up to 6 feet on standard. Hope that made more sense. And yes, I'm only playing on standard I'm not a DDR goddess yet.

My bad. Ok, the songs I haven't cracked with a AA on light are G2, Maxx Unlimited, Max 300, Drop Out, R10K, and route 80s. Everything else I got (on light). Sorry for the confusion

I've been playing since may of last year sooo.... 10 months now. I'm up to 9 foot songs, at best. Cant do 10 foot to save my soul. consistancy is the key in advancing skill in this game.

I'm really jealous of my friend. I brought him along to play at the arcade with me last week. He's never played before and he's playing on Standard. AHHHHH! It took me about 2 months to get to standard! then another 2 months to get as good as I am now!
DDR master up and coming

I'm at that two-month-and-only-on-standard mark. I have a hard time believing I'll ever get to heavy (although I did get some B's today on songs that I consider to be harder 5-footers).
Ultramix 2 didn't give me much help in advancing to standard. I think playing Ultramix and seeing more than one or two songs with 6 foot or below ratings in light mode with 1/8th notes in them helped me to start reading the arrows well enough to start playing in standard. Also, I have AA'ed almost everything in UM and UM2 below a 6 footer in light mode . . . I just played and played and played until certain step combinations became second nature. (I'm something of a perfectionist so I'd just play a song over and over until I could AA it). Once you get certain step patterns down, it's easy to speed them up or slow them down a little to achieve the 1/8th and 1/16th note patterns. Knowing the music definitely helps, as well - the steps in the songs sometimes follow just one aspect of the music, and in other songs, will change from one aspect to another (ie, in one song it follows the bass rhythm throughout, where another song will follow a synth rhythm, then the bass, then switch to the rhythm of the singer's vocals. At least, that's the way I think of it.)
Certain things still throw me off . . . I'm still training my body to do jumps . . . even with dance training outside of DDR, I was never good at jumps. Also, since I just started in standard, I'm getting very frustrated with failing and getting D's. I have a feeling that jumping from standard to heavy is going to take a *long* time.

If you can do MaxX Unlimited, Max 300 (Max-Me-Blah blah mix,) or G2 on standard you can play heavy.

i think you're ready for heavy if you can AA most standard songs excluding the maxes Agreed, I was able to move up to Heavy once I was A/AA-ing 6 footers on Standard. There's less of a quantum leap there than there is from Light to Standard.

Heavy scares me. Those arrows are so squished together I can't read them at all (What're they called, 1/16th notes?)... I got my first A's on heavy yesterday, but those were only on 5 footers lol.
I've only had the game for about 2 months anyways, so I don't want to get bored of it if I 'finish' all the songs. If I get a copy of ultramix 1 then I'll try stepping up to heavy.
The Maxs' scare me too *shudders*.

if the arrows are too mushed together, hold down A until the menu screen comes up and change the speed to x1.5 or x2

I was weary of becoming dependent on them too but I found that as you learn the steps and you take the speed back down if you familiar with the pattern it should be much easier to read at that point.
