[shadow=pink,right,300]Oh snappages![/shadow]
According to my friend who is sitting right next to me as I type, looking up E3 information, the new Nintendo system will be backwards compatible. How backwards compatible are we speaking? FULLY!
On MTV news, he said he had heard that it will support games from NES, SNES, '64, 'Cube, etc. days. The rumor mill has said that basically they will have some kind of cartridge area that you can, obviously, play all the games with. This will not only be an amazing game system, but we would all be able to play all of our old and beloved Nintendo games.
I know from first hand experience that my faith in Nintendo has faded away with the Gamecube, even though I was once a Nintendo die-hard. If all of this is true, this will be the system to own.
Yeeeeessss!

Slightly incorrect, from what I've read. Nintendo will provide a PAY DOWNLOAD SERVICE to download certain games from their back catalog. Pricing info has not been published yet, but given that the GBA classics were $20 a pop, my bet is that they'll be a lot more expensive. I would think actually that they could get the price down much lower than the GBA ports for the sole reason that they are not on carts. Carts are expensive and the only real reason that they sell em at 20 bucks is because NES games are so small in size (compared to todays games, many NES games don't even use 1KB, let alone 1GB that todays games use) that they can use the smallest and cheapest carts. Bandwidth is much cheaper than carts but I have not doubt that this is where Nintendo wants to make their money off an otherwise free online service....
I would guess that they price the games at $10-25, maybe with some of the more unpopular NES games even down to $5. The NES would probably average $10-15, SNES would average $15-20, and N64 at $20-25. Price differences will probably have to do more with size of the game and slightly be adjusted based on popularity of the game. (Can't think of a good unpopular Nintendo game offhand for an example). But really, even the biggest N64 games like Zelda or Perfect Dark (which is Rare so likely won't be on this service) is only going to be a 64MB download which isn't too bad at all... (Think Mario 64 was only 16MB) the bandwidth for it would cost MUCH less than the ROMs would.
The service is great though, Nintendo makes a good deal of money on their older games, and there are many that I wouldn't mind gettin my hands on for a console. My only real question would be how to store them. They announced the Rev would have 512MB built in flash memory which makes me wonder if that is what they are using for RAM or if that is what they will use as their HD, if it is what they use as their HD, that may not be enough if you are really dead set on having the entire library... which means you'll likely have to purchase SD cards to store the games on. (If this is the case, the cost of the downloads may be lower because they will make their money on the SD cards which will be proprietary format, not the download).

I would think actually that they could get the price down much lower They could have priced the GBA ports much lower. Cartridge production is pennies per unit, so it wasn't the raw materials that was driving price. The development of the games was done years ago, so all you have is porting costs. The games cost as much as they did for one simple reason: Nintendo could get people to buy enough copies at that price point to make a profit. With that being the case, I'd expect the Revolution games to run at similar prices, probably no lower than $15, unless they go to a subscription "all you can eat" model which is probably more likely.

I'm excited for the rev, i'm a huge Nintendo fan. I've heard rumors that it'll come with a DEV KIT! Awesome!
I’m not going to give out the secret. It’s going to be very fun; wait until E3. Nintendo is going to roll out a trojan horse: something that looks innocent and weak and them bam, it will be unveiled. Just don’t make up your mind on the first day of E3.

no it's not. You have to purchase all old games online through the system...as was stated @ E3.

Who would have thought that the XBox would actually become the inferior machine?

Who would have thought that the XBox would actually become the inferior machine? That's the price of getting first console released. At this point developers aren't really pushing the hardware to it's full limits anyway. It's going to be all about content this generation. Who gets the titles, the exclusives, who handles online better, who brings the better additional features? Those are the questions that will determine who comes out on top this go-round. Nintendo has always had good enough content to hang around, but like Sega, they could just sign on with one of the other two and get out of the console biz.

well, I will say that after the second day of coverage I am much more impressed with the new xbox. As I had hoped I would be.... but it still doesn't compare to ps3. In the end I have a feeling I will do the same as I did last time. Buy xbox after a year when the price goes way down and buy the ps3 right away....that does pend on the release of quake 4 however.... hmmmmm..
oh and while I was watching e3 I saw a banner that said Chronicles of Narnia! did anyone else see this? Does anyone else see how cool that could be? I definetely can't see that as an xbox title though.... hmm..

Ok well...I hate to say it, I know I am going to be flamed for saying this...but I think Nintendo is really suffering and possibly going out soon. They have always managed to hang in there, but due to the great games coming with the Microsoft consoles and the Sony consoles, Nintendo is behind the pack. I have always loved the old nintendo games, and still own and play my NES...and Atari 2600...(side story...I still remember going out to places with my dad and buying cartridges for the atari when I was like 5 or 6 years old...even though the only game he played was galaga (sp?...)) but yeah...I think Nintendo will have a hard time catching up. Feel free to rant against me...I know I have it coming...

No flames here, I agree with you. Nintendo's strength hasn't been in their hardware for a long time now. Where they shine is in their 1st party games, and in their ability to innovate gameplay. Those qualities aren't tied to hardware, so I can easily see them becoming like Sega, licensing their games to run on other consoles. The GameBoy(s) have been Big-N's saviors so far, and I doubt the PSP will be a long term contender there, but it may not be enough to keep them afloat.
