Hi everyone~ I picked up DDR for PS2 Monday, and already i've been clocking 400 calorie workouts every day this week. I'm 204 lbs, which is way above what I used to weigh one year ago, a mere 165 lbs...thats my normal weight. What can I say, I got a full time job after college and havent found time to work out for the past year, thus the weight gain. But I've been really inspired by reading on this forum and decided to join the crew and get in shape! LOL! I feel like we should all be on oprah or something! Anyway, I will keep a log so all can see my progress. *crosses fingers* god i hopes its progress! ;D MAY 31 ~ 204 lbs

*update*
6/16~ 200 lbs
I've dropped 4 pounds total as of yesterday! I also started the atkins diet last monday, 6/7, so that might have something to do with the weight loss. Anyway, I'm doing 600 calorie workouts per day now.

I'm not saying this to discourage you, but the first 20 pounds are the easiest. You'll probably experience a slowdown in weight loss at about 185. Don't let it discourage you, the weight will continue to come off, but it's just be slower.
I started working out at 204, too. But it took me 9 years to get there from 135. I was able to drop my first 20 pounds in 6 weeks. It took an additional two months to drop to 176.

Atkins.....echhhh..
Many people have had great success using "keto" diets. I did quite a bit of research on keto-style diets and decided they were not a good match for me. Personally I don't think putting your body in a state of ketosis is a very healthy thing to do. My goal was to change my eating and exercise habits permanently, so a keto diet didn't seem like a very good solution for my particular goals. I do try to stay away from high GI (Glycemic Index) carbs, except immediately following my morning workout. I also restrict my carb intake after 5:00 PM. I think carb management is a better, more healthy and more sustainable solution than severe carb restriction.

The only real diet modifications I've made are cutting out soft drinks and any sort of candy/sweet items past 6PM. so all im drinking now is water and it's helped a lot.

Cutting out fast food helped tremendously for me. You have no idea how bad it really is for you. When I'd eat out, I'd be conscious about how it's prepared. I'd only eat grilled chicken, lean fish (never fried) and I'd try to stay away from rice/pasta after dark since it's just heavy stuff that's hard to burn for your body, and usually ends up turning into fat.
Water is great, it's sad when I drink a soda now, and my body FEELS sluggish. I think it's a testament on how unhealthy I actually was.

Ditto! The only major change I've made in my diet is cutting out Mocha Lattes, they have a lot of sugar in them (I was spending way too much $$$ on them also) and I quit drinking soda years ago (my dentist scared me) so that isn't a factor. I did switch to light beer. : )

Yeah, I just started as well. I've been doing 1000 kcal each day, and I plan to start doing more soon.
None of those fad diets for me. I just eat healthy food, six small meals a day, and drink plenty of water.

Yeah fast food bad, and if ya gotta either go Salad or somekinda grilled chicken BUT NO FRIES and..diet soda/water is a good thing to get on. I just kept it under like 1500 cal. a day, or tried to. And like...played 18 songs or 21 songs a day. On heavy that's 600-700 cal. a day + normal daily calorie burnage + a little bit of weight bench = OMFG MY PANTS ARE SMALLER!!! And yours will be too :-D

I just got my Ignition dance pad and DDR Ultramix today (July 7).
I too am inspired to loose about 30-40 lbs. I'm 6'0" and currently about 200 lbs. I used to be about 170-175 about 4 years ago when I regulary practiced Tae Kwon Do (1st degree black belt) and danced quite a bit at parties and such.
Well, college came and went, not only did I graduate with my B.F.A. degree, but my waist size graduated from a 32 to a 36. I now spend most of my time in front of a computer at work, and I defintely don't have the energy I used to.
I just recently decided to do something for myself and have some fun while I'm at it. I just spent this evening playing DDR with my new ignition pad and managed to burn 1000 calories. Not too bad. I have somewhat decen eating habits. The only soda I drink is diet. I drink at least 48oz of water a day (more now that I'm playing DDR) I drink low-carb beer (though I don't drink that often) I eat till I'm satisfied, not till I'm full. Also working out more will curb the snacking.
I don't expect to reach my goal weight quickly, though I'd be happy with a loss of 20lbs. within 3 or 4 months.
so yeah. I'm excited to join the other dedicated people here, and I'll try to keep you all updated with my progress.
;D

Care to actually back up your claims with some hard science, or are you just here to shout?

Care to actually back up your claims with some hard science, or are you just here to shout? Agreed on my part Atkins is bad. It's been proven that not enough carbs results in a lack of energy. I myself went one the Atkins for about two months, and lost little weight, 5-10 lbs. Everything you eat on the Atkins is basically a heart-attack on a plate. Do's: Drink a lot of water, try not to eat big meals, try to eat a few small meals, lots of veggies, and some fruit; it's not as great for you as people say. However, in the morning instead of drinking a cup of coffee, eat an apple. Why? Because one apple in the morning has the same effect on your body as two cups of cofee do. Eat carbs if you want, they give you energy to play DDR. Don'ts: Go on the Atkins and clog your triglycerites. Don't drink pop, it's one of the worst things you can drink and it gives you kidney stones. Don't eat fatty foods, that ice cream you want is ONLY mental. Eh, I guess that's about it for me...

The problem with Atkins isn't so much the diet itself, but the fact that people misconstrue the diet to mean that they can eat whatever they want, as long as it doesn't have carbs. You still need to pay attention to what you're eating, and you still need to eat carbs, just don't go overboard with it. Personally, I'm more of a fan of the Zone diet (30% protein, 30% "good" fats, 40% carbs). Most people will have to cut back on carbs with the Zone, but you're balancing things out better.

Well it's also a fact that JUST because you eat bad food and can burn off the calories (ddr...) doesn't mean you're going to be healthy. you could get skinny, but that still doesn't really mean you're HEALTHY.

The zone diet is effective because it cuts calories..also because you are eating fat and protein you are satiated as opposed to eating a sugary processed carby diet where your insulin spikes driving you to the fridge.
However, many people cannot micromanage their nutrients as much as the Zone requires..And you have to admit Dr. Sears takes much of the PLEASURE of food out of it with his scientific book!
AGAIN TO LOSE WEIGHT
eat real food - get rid of processed stuff and garbage..
eat small portions - no supersizing
eat at mealtimes - few snacks
and MOVE!!
