The zone diet is effective because it cuts calories..also because you are eating fat and protein you are satiated as opposed to eating a sugary processed carby diet where your insulin spikes driving you to the fridge. However, many people cannot micromanage their nutrients as much as the Zone requires..And you have to admit Dr. Sears takes much of the PLEASURE of food out of it with his scientific book! AGAIN TO LOSE WEIGHT eat real food - get rid of processed stuff and garbage.. eat small portions - no supersizing eat at mealtimes - few snacks and MOVE!! Agreed. Except for the eating only at mealtimes thing. Eat when your body tells you to, to keep your blood sugar levels constant. Shrink your meals to offset the snacks, and keep the snacks small.

Hi Abrannan..I love your posts.. you are very knowledgeable.
The problem with mini meals..is folks dont eat mini meals. Studies By Dr. Barbara Rolls, have show that folks will forget how much they ate at one meal and will continue to eat as much at the next. In other words if you are giving X amount of food..you will eat it. At the next meal given X amount of food you will eat that too!
So within the past few years there has been this eat mini meals thing..but for most people it doesnt work because they dont eat mini meals..they will eat meals..6 times a day!
If you eat properly at each meal..protein, fats, carbos...you will not need to snack and eat mini meals.
ONE exception will be mid afternoon..some folks will need a little something to eat.
If you look at the French who are slender as a culture with lower body fat and heart disease than Americans..they eat 3 meals per day..about 32% will have a mid afternoon snack. They do not have the rampant health issues we do.
Its fine to eat mini meals if you will eat mini meals..but it backfires for most people and they wind up eating more!

I'd like to think we're both right. I'm looking at it from a pure blood chemistry standpoint. You're looking at it from a behavioral standpoint. But yes, if you aren't able to listen to your body and stop eating when you're no longer hungry, and you're still striving to be a member of the "clean plate club", you'll overeat if you don't portion control at the outset. I think it's a little simplistic to look only at the french diet as a source of their health. There are a number of cultural issues (more public transportation, more walking/bicycle riding -> more exercise, shorter work weeks, socialized health care) and genetic issues (There are certain areas of France where the people have extremely low HLD cholesterol levels, but those HDL particles are an order of magnitude larger than most people's) that some into play when considering health/obesity levels. It's like saying that because Asian cultures aren't as fat as Americans, and Asians eat a lot of rice, that Americans are fat because we don't eat enough rice.

You make some excellent points..A !!!
The French do walk and get more exercise than us because of the way their society is set up.
They also do not eat the chemicals we do. Aiming for fresh, unprocessed food etc. Little faux food! So they dont have the cravings that fake sugars like aspartame can set you up for.
BUT they also eat on the whole 25% less than Americans! Portion sizes are much smaller. Here in the States biggie size is the size... They have learned to eat appropriate portions.
We have learned to eat way too much!
So if you eat lots of good veggies and fresh fruit and some proteins and fats and you enjoy the food and eat it in moderation..you dont have to turn eating into a chemistry lesson..and micromanage nutrients.
You can be free to enjoy the pleasure of your food and be at a healthy weight.
I mean who wants to eat a bit of banana and some crackers and then a few hours later a bit of protein and some veggies and then a few hours later..etc etc.
Food is a pleasure and should be enjoyed..
That said I am glad mini meals work for you. I know a lot of athletes eat that way..I personally dont care for it..because its just not fun!

I blame the great depression for our portion sizes and "clean your plate" mentality. Our grandparents had so little to eat and had to make the most of what they did have, that when the depression broke, they made sure to always provide large portions to our parents. And since wasting food was almost criminal to them, they taught our parents to always clean their plates, regardless of how full they felt. Our parents then passed those teachings on to us. Combine that with the American mentality of "get more for your money" which made those restaurants, who gave you the largest portions for the least money, the best value, and we've signed our own death warrant.

Wow...I feel sort of unknowledgable. (sp?)
But I do know that since I've started playing DDR my eating has decreased a LOT, and it's mostly good food, fruit, veggies, [not a lot of but enough] meats and bread- related foods... random thought.

Very true Abrannan....
also if most people pulled 20 random items out of their cupboards..they would find HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP..this junk is a cheap way manufacturers sweeten food. Many people believe it is not processed well by the body and causes fat storage in addition it promotes a sweet tooth...and is not nutritious.
Take a peek at your food right now..its in almost all bread, ketchup, salad dressing , many NUTRITION bars etc etc.
Thus I make my own bread and I watch for it...
You dont find this FAUX ingredient in many food stuffs in Europe..you dont find the fake this or that..
If you get the fake stuff out it really helps..
Once you start to eat real healthy food in moderate portions..the thought of eating the fake stuff is gross..

BTW as far as chugging water goes..that is not needed. Drink when you are thirsty, after exercising etc.
Why people in the States feel it necessary to drink mass volumes of water I dont know..It's been proven that water does not curb appetite..(though water filled foods do) although some people do mistake hunger for thirst. YES WATER IS GREAT FOR YOU AND YOUR SKIN..but again..you dont need to chug it down..
Also drinking mass quantities of water is the way the volume eaters..(ie the people that eat the most hot dogs etc) train.
Drink when you need to and want too..

Firstly, High Fructose Corn Syrup isn't faux anything. It's a natural product made from corn. That doesn't mean it's good for you. Snake venom is natural too.
Secondly, depending on where you live, you may need to chug lots of water, even when you don't notice your thirst. Here, in Utah, it is dry as a bone and the hot air will suck the water right out of your body if you're not careful. We have dehydration problems all the time at our summer outdoor activities (like the State Fair and concerts). People are out in the sun and don't even notice that they are nearly fainting from dehydration.
The most important thing is to pay attention to your body. It's just like Forest Gump said, "When I was tired, I rested. When I was hungry, I ate."

Laura, Arsenic is a natural product too and not good for you. No where did I say all natural products are good for you.
What I did say is that high fructose corn syrup is a major cause of obesity in the US. I firmly believe that and I am not alone in my opinion. Just do an internet search.
I also said it is not necessary to chug down tons of water. What I mean is simply you dont have to go out of your way to drink a gallon of water a day if you are not thirsty. If you have trouble recognizing your thirst..then by all means drink up!
