Ive still just got the standard mat you get with the game originally, so no real advice here. Just get a mat that will last you long and is stable, that wont move too much.

Cobalt flux, they run the things over with SUV's to test em. Rated for 800+ pounds. Awesome warranty that includes free shipping if it breaks. If you got the money, go for it.

Hi there. First post, here.
I've spent a lot of trial-and-error with the pads since I first started playing DDR. I only really play at home, and so home-pads have become a topic I really follow.
When I started out, right after Jan 2003, I got myself a Mad-catz plain ol' mat. That was great for teaching myself the dynamics of the game, but I very quickly outgrew it, and I hated how my feet hurt so badly from more or less just jumping around on the floor.
By May or June 2003, I had saved up the money and got a couple ignition-style pads with the thick black foam inserts. I saw an immediate increase in skill and had more fun playing -- for a while. I also outgrew this pad because of some technical problems. Us larger folks will wear out the contacts, making the buttons somewhat unresponsive. I also had a problem with having caused the foam to sink in. Hrm.
I decided in November 2003 that I had to get something better. I had all but stopped playing DDR because I was frustrated with the missed steps when I KNEW I did better than what was happening. I decided on Cobalt Flux after a LOT of research and started saving my cash. I ordered them in February right after I got my tax refund. The wait will kill you since they build each pad at their warehouse and test it before they ship it out.
But once I got it? Such a dream. My only negative feeling about them is that they are impossible to store unless you can stick them under a king-sized bed or something.
I now play with my shoes on, which seems a lot better for my feet. These things are solid, I am not scared at all of breaking or wearing this thing out. I had been playing with the idea of modding my own pad, but I'm glad I went this route, instead. The team at Cobalt Flux is incredibly helpful if you ever run into problems such as an unresponsive button and will help you take the panels off yourself so that you can try to fix it by cleaning under the panels instead of sending it back in, but if you DO Need to send it back in, I'm pretty impressed by their warranty.
All-in-all, I will say that I realize the price is rather daunting. (My pair of pads was $689 or so including shipping.) But if you can afford it, these are a worthwhile investment.
