My Xbox is officially dead.
Cause: Thomson DVD Drive Broke

Replacement Plans: Preorder Xbox 360 at Gamestop

On a better note I got stepmania to register jumps from my pad so it'll work while I wait for the 360(dont have a ps2 and dont plan on getting a ps3)

I am not a fanboy...but so far PS3 is looking sweet...Xbox...well as cool as it is, I am not sure that it will be able to compare with the proposed power of the cells for the PS3...we will have to wait to find out. Plus I am not sure I am going to buy one because they are being made primarily for HDTVs, but have the option to play on regular ones. My tech teacher told me for a basic HDTV and Xbox 360 (or PS3...not too sure) it will run you a minimum of 1k.

The next gen consoles will be made for HDTV in the same way that this generations was made for component input. It's available to take advantage of, but will in no way be required. If you already have an HDTV, or are getting one for your own reasons, great, but don't think that you'll absolutely NEED one to play with the next gen consoles.

I know, but to take full advantage of the capabilities of the system...HD is pretty much required...but for those of us with not that much money, regular component is alright....I guess....

Get your xbox box put the xbox in it with the wires and controller and bring it back to zellers or walmart and tell them you dont have a recipt. they'll give u a new one.

(I've done it twice without a recipt. one time i traded a PS2 for an xbox at zellers)

While this may work, I really can't condone any sort of fraud (and let's not split hairs here, this is fraud). When people start to abuse store policies that exist to make life easier for others, they end up ruining it for everyone when the company changes their policy.

Why not just but a replacement Thompson drive from Ebay (they're under $25) and replace the drive yourself?

I have one little peice of advise. The XBOX 360 does NOT play Xbox games. Which I find is stupid, but hey. What the CEOs say, goes -_-

Yeah. But if you have it for XBox, you need to buy it again for XBox 360 (or buy a cheaper, pirated version. SHHHH)

The Xbox 360 achieves backwards compatibility through software emulation of the original Xbox hardware. Games have minor graphical enhancements due to being rendered in 720p resolutions with Anti-Aliasing enabled. Some games have slightly improved draw distance, possibly due to the system's greater memory bandwidth.

A hard drive is required to enable backwards compatibility. Hard drives purchased separately or as part of the console package will include a certain number of "emulation profiles" for games, including Halo and Halo 2. Updated emulation profiles can be obtained through Xbox live, by burning a CD with content downloaded from Xbox.com, or by ordering an update disc from Microsoft at a nominal fee. [8]

The list of backward compatible games for the U.S. market was released on November 11, 2005 and is maintained at Xbox.com. Although the U.S. list includes over 200 games, fewer games are listed as backward compatible in the European markets. As of January 10, 2006, the Japanese Xbox site shows only 30 [9].

Microsoft states that they will be adding more emulation profiles as they become available, with the intended goal of making the entire Xbox library playable on the Xbox 360. [10]

The new (feburary) issue of OXM (official xbox magazine) comes with a free beta version (full version) of that game. You need the hard drive to run it, but its the full version of the game with a couple expansion packs, and theirs no fees for the beta.
