Hi, I came here because I started playing ddr to drop a few pounds befor those vicious summer months. Anyways, I live a flat, and I guess the noise from my jumping around any whatnot is bugging my neighbors downstairs. I practise during the day, so it's not an issue of them being awake, and I try to play an hour a day. However, as I'm a poor student, I only downloaded stepmania, but didn't buy a pad/adaptor for my PC. I was wondering if the pad would snuff the noise enough for them and me to be happy, or if perhaps i should look to another exercise routine?

That's a tough one, because in order to sufficiently dampen the noise from "jumping and whatnot" you need a soft pad, but in order to allow you to move your feet fast enough for some of the faster songs, you need a firmer pad. I'm not sure that an Ignition-style pad will do enough for you (I can't use mine upstairs in our house, as it still shakes the floor too much). You might try different solutions (Mat on a stack of blankets, etc) and see if anything is suitable for your neighbors. Talk to them and see if there is any time they moght not be home that you could use to workout, or if some arrangement could be made. Communication can work wonders.

I talked to them about it, and our schedules just don't allow for it it seems. They dont' want to put up with it, but I think I'm going to try the blanket thing, it seems like a good idea. It's a college owned apartment though ffs, you'd think they'd expect noise....

Sometimes there is no pleasing people. If they aren't willing to work with your schedule, find out what the rules are. It might be that they have no right to complain if you are exercising during the day.

You're absolutely right, I asked the RA. She said as long as I'm not doing it during quiet hours at night, I'm fine.
I'd like to be respectful, but I'd also like to take care of myself.

i agree that respect and common courtesy is a big thing, but if all else fails, you need to look out for #1 (i.e: you.)
you cant please everyone and if it was the difference between making myself happy and bending over backwards to make someone else happy, then i would rather make myself happy with less hassle. seems selfish, but hey.....no one got through life taking care of everyone else.

Try doing it on the balls of your feet. That's what I do, I don't step as hard, but make a good contact. Plus my calves could be from a professional bike rider right now
