Is there really a big difference between versions of the game?
Having never played before, which version would be best?

DDRMAX2
Konamix
Extreme

I'd say MAX2 or Extreme, they have beginner mode, and they also have a nice selection of low foot-rating light mode songs.
The real difference between mixes is the songlist for that mix. Extreme does add the party mode games, particularly if you have an EyeToy.

I learned playing Max 2, and I would probably start with that. It has a fairly large variety of songs, and they are basically all good.
