I believe there are templates for this someone, even a tool. I've seen this cropping up in a few forums and when that starts to happen, someone ends up writing a script. here is an example of the map on a forum: www.expat-blog.com/forum/map.php I'm not sure where they got the code to create the map, but it seems to look like this: <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[
var map = new GMap(document.getElementById("map")); map.addControl(new GLargeMapControl()); map.addControl(new GMapTypeControl()); map.centerAndZoom(new GPoint(2.341, 48.857), 15);
function createMarker(point, marker) { var marker; var id = marker.getAttribute("id"); var username = marker.getAttribute("username"); var title = marker.getAttribute("title"); var realname = marker.getAttribute("realname"); var url = marker.getAttribute("url"); var location = marker.getAttribute("location"); if(marker.getAttribute("useavatar") == 1 && marker.getAttribute("avatar") != "") { var avatar = "<dd><img src=\""+marker.getAttribute("avatar")+"\" alt=\"\" /></dd>"; } else { var avatar = ''; }
var marker = new GMarker(point); username = username.replace("<", "<"); username = username.replace(">", ">"); username = username.replace('"', """); realname = realname.replace("<", "<"); realname = realname.replace(">", ">"); realname = realname.replace('"', """); location = location.replace("<", "<"); location = location.replace(">", ">"); location = location.replace('"', """);
var html = "<dl><dt><strong><a href=\"profile.php?id="+id+"\">"+username+"</a></strong></dt>"+avatar+"<dd>"+realname+"</dd><dd>"+location+"</dd></dl>"; GEvent.addListener(marker, "click", function() { marker.openInfoWindowHtml(html); }); return marker; }
var request = GXmlHttp.create(); request.open("GET", "markers.php", true); request.onreadystatechange = function() { if (request.readyState == 4) { var xmlDoc = request.responseXML; var markers = xmlDoc.documentElement.getElementsByTagName("marker"); for (var i = 0; i < markers.length; i++) { var point = new GPoint(parseFloat(markers[i].getAttribute("lng")), parseFloat(markers[i].getAttribute("lat"))); var marker = createMarker(point, markers[i]) map.addOverlay(marker); } } } request.send(null);
//]]> </script> This could be done if someone coded a page to let people enter their name and coordinates which would be saved to a file. The file would then be read when the map is loaded and place all the users on it. Since people can get interesting with their "location" it would be too hard to just read the database and generate the map off that.

www.frappr.com This is a nifty program that lets people *pin* themselves up on a map. ^_^ I didn't create one since i figured one of the forum Admins would want to be able to control it.
