I'm currently in an apprenticeship program becomming a mechanic. I'm making 15$(4-5$ off for taxes, yes the canadian goverment takes alot, gawd damn health care) an hour and planning to save 75% of my paycheck for 4-5 years. I'm then going to use that money towards a house. Moving to The US seems like a good place for a mechanic, but where's a nice place to go with cheap housing? I also want to rent out the house with a few others so they can pay the morgage and utilities.
I want your opinions, I've talked to many people and they all think that this is a great idea since at the moment i'm at home not paying rent or food or gas. Which is why i can save so much money.
Negative or Positive, Bring IT!

I'd stay clear of the big cities, as the cost of living is HIGH there. That includes:
Washington, DC San Francisco, CA Los Angeles, CA New York, NY Chicago, IL Dallas, TX Boston, MA Philadelphia, PA
Other than that, a lot depends on the type of climate you like (Weather and political). You can get close to those cities for decently cheap.

As a mechanic, the best paying jobs would be in a suburbia setting. I live in MN and there are a lot of suburbs here, just like everywhere else. If you were to work in the suburbs, you could live right outside them and the houses are A LOT cheaper even if its only 15-30 min away. As long as you dont mind a small commute.
