Ok, recently, in an effort to repair my dead soft mat, we replaced the sensors with pieces of wire mesh and proximity sensors. I'm not exactly sure on all the technical details, I'll try to have my dad write out a layout later on...
Well, cutting to the chase... The mod worked fine for a few days, but then the left arrow started glitching like crazy (ghost stepping tons, sometimes sensing you when you're not even near the pad). We've already tried replacing the chip, but no luck there. Any other ideas on what could cause this?

You're doing something like this, right? www.spritesmods.com/?art=ddrmatAssuming it's not a Pot adjustment issue, the only thing I can think of would be if you left the original sensor meshes still "live". That could create interference that could trip the sensor. Otherwise I'd look for environmental issues.

Hmm, interesting observation... if we lift an edge of the pad off the ground for a few seconds, when it hits the ground again, it goes nuts for a few seconds...

Problem found and solved. Problem: 1) The controller wasn't taking in enough power to work properly 2) Interference was coming in from the floor (pipes, maybe) Solution: 1) Add a wall plug. Didn't want to have to do this, but oh well... 2) Add a shield circuit thing-a-ma-bob. My dad explained it, but I didn't understand it one bit.

Yep, this settles it. A hard mat is going on my xmas list. 2 days after we fix the mat, the front arrow sticks and won't unstick. If this mod is gonna mean having to repair it every 2 days, then screw it. I want a hard mat.
This project = Thumbs Down
EDIT: And it's not like I was even doing anything too difficult. I was tired from my arcade trip yesterday so wasn't playing anything higher than a 9. The front arrow started screwing up during the second hold on Flying High expert... and that's a really easy song for a 9, too.

Bleh, it keeps being some mundane detail that's easily permanently fixable. This time it was actually the material that the cover's made out of causing interference. We just plastered the inside of it with duct tape and everything's fine now.
