Its one thing to like anime, its another to be obsessed with it. I just went to that convention for something to do while i was visiting my friends out of state.
Girls dont have to like EVERYTHING you do. Most probably wont.

I've heard that women think mechanics are sexy. They are dirty in that "he's been working hard for me" sort of way. Plus, they think you can fix their car.

I know this is an incredibly old thread and it was presumed dead, but I was looking at old posts to get a feel for things.
As an anime fan, I feel I need to step up and defend my hobby.
For those that beleive that anime is thinly veiled porn, I would direct their attention to Voices of a Distant Star, Seriel Experiments Lain, and Wings of Honeamese (sp?). These are just three examples, but they fly in the face that anime is as mindless as porn.

I was going to post a list of hentai movies to counter your examples, but then it seemed childish to do so.
The problem is that American audiences don't distinguish between types of animated movie. Even the Miyazaki films that have been brought over here to theaters have been marketed to children. They don't understand that there's a difference between hentai, shoujou, shonen, etc. To them it's all animation, and therefore children's fare.
It's not just that animators can get away with more, Japanese filmmakers can get away with more in general. Look at Ichi the Killer, Battle Royal and The Audition. All live action, all things that no American filmmaker could get funding for, or get by the MPAA ratings board.

Yeah, people just don't understand that animation is a medium rather than a genre...
I've been to A-kon a few years in a row. I go there with people from a chatroom I used to hang out in and many of their friends. It is usually a blast. They had like 6+ DDR Machines there last year! You get to watch anime for free, see tons of freaks in costumes, hang out with people you hardly know while checking out the nightlife of the city, play some games, see some concerts, buy some overpriced crap, go to room parties, meet a crazy person running for the position of God, spray random stinky people with Axe, take lots of pictures, eat pocky (not too much, though!), go to a dance, and realize that there are people that are a bazillion times nerdier than you will ever be.
This year, two of my friends are having a college graduation party that will last like an entire week around A-kon. I definitely can't wait.

That's what I've been trying to tell people.
Anime itself is more of a giant umbrella.
Sometimes I get frustrated when people make wide reaching assumptions about anime. They assume that everyone will have big eyes, that there will be panty shots every 3 seconds, and that someone is going to make some noise that's between a grunt and a whine.
I personally am into Mechs and Cyberpunk anime. I am a big fan of Robotech, Macross, Evangalion, Lain, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Bebop. (yes, I consider bebop to be cyberpunk.) I would even go so far as to say Chobits is cyberpunkish. Oddly enough, my tastes in movies tend to reflect my choice in Anime. I love Blade Runner.
Oh, and about the childish listing. heh. No offense would have been taken. I would have countered with live action examples.
Lumping Noir in with Legend of the Overfiend would be like lumping Le Femme Nikita in with Debbie Does Dallas.
A-kon is the convention I play at. I actually work A-Fest.
Anime conventions are full of the geeked out things you did in high school without all the jocks and pretty people there to screw it up.

Anime conventions are full of the geeked out things you did in high school without all the jocks and pretty people there to screw it up. Ok, now I take offense to that. Who's stereotyping now? Takes one to know one. I guess I'm a 'jock,' or with that 'crowd,' and 'scene,' and I've never felt the need to mess up something that someone else likes. Also, what's wrong with Debbie Does Dallas?

There's nothing wrong with Debbie Does Dallas, I just prefer plot in my movies.
And the Jock thing was a blatant stereo-typing. No offense was meant.

Ichi the Killer happens to be the most disturbing violent movie i've ever seen, lol, i'd actually prefer a diluted american adaptation with a little more character development of the guy with the purple suit.
Battle Royal...is just...awesome
I wouldn't say i'm an anime fan, i just...watch anything that happens to get my attention, have to say the ones i heart the most are FLCL, Wolf's Rain, and the stereotypical ones, ninja scroll, miyazaki flicks, bepop, akira, ghost in t3h bullet...but...Wolf's Rain and FLCL stand out.

R.O.D was a good 3 episode sieres (took me awhile to spell that ^^^^ did i get it right?) but it tryed to be over dramatic but the animation was kick ass. Everyone loves Bebop it's a great series (hey i think i spelt it right this time) but the movie was better in some ways. maybe cause it was more up to date? anwayz, Lain was great I was really into that even though i was lost pretty much through the whole thing. Trigun was great. Anyone know where I can find another good series cause I wanna watch more

Try Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
I also enjoy Chobits, but it's a bit on the comedy side.
If you haven't been exposed yet, take a look at Evangalion. *evil grin*

Read or Die had a follow on 24 episode series outside of the 3 episodes you've seen. It doens't have the characters from the original 3, but it continues the storyline a bit.

Anime fan... guilty.... I've seen a few series', currently I'm watching Full Metal Alchemist. These are some of my favs: Trigun Full Metal Alchemist Kenshin Evangelion Hellsing There are lots of other good ones too, but those are at the top of my list. Full Metal is quite good, check it out if you get the chance. I wasn't a big fan of Cowboy Bebop, and only sat through maybe 5 eps. Anime seems to be becoming much more mainstream I find. Back when I got into it, it was so hard to find anything. The first movie I saw was Vampire Hunter D, and I was hooked by all the unnecessary gore In closing... yes
