What would cause this: My Cobalt Flux works fine in a game - but the x does not work to select . I don't think it's the pad, because at one time it did work, then i messed with the buttons on the box, then after that it never did again. I'm sure the contact is fine -- I have tightened and loosened screws; the give on the button seems good. But x doesn't work so I have to use the o to select and confirm everything.
Also, I can't select my Options in a song, either in Stellar Master or Game mode. When I select Options (using the o button because x doesn't do it), the Options menu comes up, with the first option (speed)highlighted, and I can change that, but then I can't move down to other options; they stay grayed out. The down arrow won't take me down the options. But the down arrow works great in game.
This is driving me crazy because I can't get my options open to advance in StellarMaster trials...
I'm thinking I have something programmed wrong or something -- although I never tried to edit, or change mapping to buttons or anything -- any ideas on what I can do or how to test to see what the problem is? I've never played video games so don't know much about controllers and would appreciate any help from you gaming experts.

Doesn't the CF have start/select buttons on the back 2 panels?
There might a problem with the disc, perhaps a scratch or something. Try cleaning it. If you say that the CF is fine, then the problem lies with the disc or the PS2.

Use the PS2 start menu (boot without a disc in the drive) to test out your buttons. You can eliminate the game as a possible issue by connecting a normal controller to the PS2 and try selecting the options you want in DDR that way. If you're successful with a normal controller, it's not a game setting.

I hooked up another controller and could get to everything. Also, I notice that when the PS2 game is on, and I plug the flux in, that the game immediately by itself selects the song on the screen, without any movement on the controller. So I am thinking it is stuck down, even though when I step on it it has a normal "give" to it, and I have both tightened and loosened screws with no effect. Now the next question is what to do. I have had the pad for 6 months but have not cleaned it yet, 'cuz I'm afraid of messing something else up. But I guess I need to see if it will make a difference.

Okay, so you've got a short somewhere in the right upper corner. Unfortunately, I don't own a flux myself, so I don't know what the internals look like. Probably, you've got something in under the arrow that's creating a closed circuit. Unscrew the arrow cover altogether and vacuum out the insides. Then put the cover back and see if you've still got the problem.
