I was trying the workout mode in DDR Extreme. I only played on heavy mode about 15 minutes or so, but it said I burned like, 200 calories! Is that really possible? It seems kind of high to me. Does anyone know exactly how accurate the workout mode calorie counter is? I put my exact weight in too...

It's not exact. For example, if you just stand on the mat and wave your arms wildly, it'll record 0 calories, even though you were doing something. I'd recommend using it as a comparison for two different sessions. So if you burned 200 in 15 minutes, you can see how long that would take on standard, etc.

...and to add to that, if you're going to play ITG, you might as well set it on 5 lbs or you'll never get a realistic measure of how much you really burned, although even at 5 lbs it's still too many.

In someof the DDR games (I can vouch for Dancing Stage Party Mix), you can set whether you want to record the steps you make other than the ones you make on screen. I have it on that setting, and a few extra steps and jumps inbetween could double your calories burnt by the end of the song. Especially alternate jumps! Jumps are huge calorie burners.

I read on ddrfreak that in one of the console games (can't remember which) the number is off by a factor of 10 (100 calories shown = 10 real calories burned).
I've given a lot of thought to the accuracy of the DDR calorie measure. One way to check the accuracy might be to use a mile of walking as a comparison. I've read that 1 mile (running or walking) = 100 calories burned. If you knew how many steps you take in a mile (using a pedometer or just counting), you should be able to figure out calories per step, then multiply your ddr steps by that to get the calories:
100 calories ----------------- = calories per step steps per mile
(calories per step) x (steps danced) = calories burned.

Ah, if it were only that simple. 100 calories per mile is itself just an estimate. Time between steps matters, distance of step matters, your heart rate at the moment you're taking that step matters, the length of time you've been exercising matters, the amount you're moving your arms matters. All of these factors add up and make it extremely difficult to accurately measure how many calories you burn for any given activity.
