Hi all! I have never tried DDR, but I was thinking of investing in it as a fun and convenient exercise machine.
I have some questions that I hope somebody will be able to help me with!
First, I am quite heavy (~275 lbs). Will I be able to use standard RedOctane Ignition 2.0 pad? That was the recommended one on this website. I am worried that it will break right away and not support my weight. Is that an appropriate pad for someone who is new to this? If not, then what would be a good alternative choice?
Second, I am quite out of shape. Are there "easy" modes for people like me, or will I find it too difficult to even start?
Third, where is the best place to buy the game and pad? The RedOctane website, ebay, or ... ?
Thanks for any suggestions! I am having a hard time navigating what to buy and where to buy it to try this out.

I'm not light, but I've never had a problem. My friend weighed about 325 lbs and had a Mad Catz Pad that didn't last him much over two months, but switched to the Red Octane pad and never had a problem with it. Yes, there are easy modes. Gamestop.

My Mad Catz also went to hell, as did my Red Octane 2.0 after only a month or so of playing it 5-6 hours a day... maybe I'm bringing too much to the mat, but it seems I'm having bad luck.

I don't recommend the Xbox system. There is only one game and UltraMix is severely shy of easy songs. I had an incredibly hard time getting the hang of playing until I got some major practice using beginning songs (I played StepMania). Now, the Xbox is playable for me, but it took a good month of playing at the beginning level on StepMania to get there.
I wouldn't recommend StepMania, however. It was very hard to get it to work easily on my PC. It's set up right now, but I had a dickens of a time getting it working.
I guess that just leaves you with PlayStation. There are tons of games to choose from, so I think it's your best option.

I will pry get shunned for this, but I recommend investing in a Level Six Deluxe Pad, I see no difference in between that and the Red Octane Igntion Pad, my friend Mike was going to get a Red Octane one and he tried out the Level Six and he was freaking out cause this was the same feel as the Red Octane his friend had. It will save you a lot of money (X-Box version is like $45.00 PS2 is like $44.00).
I reserved DDR Extreme and Ultramix 2 Bundle pack this past weekend...two weeks til Extreme!
I get Fable for X-Box next week, that'll hold me over to DDR Extreme!

Fable will rock. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do this... www.komusa.com/ there are Red Ignition 2.0's for $36.00 or so if the sale is still going on. I much recommend starting out with Max 2 if you want to ease into DDRing slowly, Max if you want to learn eighths steps and tricker rhythms fast.

The only advantage to the Ignitions is that they're now coming with both PS2 and Xbox adapters, so you can use them on either system without getting another adapter.

Well Im around 320, and I have knock-off ignitions as well. I bought mine on Ebay from vortz.com. They are the ones with the 1" thick hard foam, just like levelsix's deluxe pads, and I got TWO of them for $25 plus $25 shipping. Not a bad deal. Also, I bought 2 SmartJoy PLUS from levelsix.com and I couldnt be happier. They work great and are very durable.
