Money's no object? I'd say Afterburner. CF isn't cross platform (They've been delaying the Xbox control box for ages), the Afterburner has hookups for PS2, Xbox and USB.
Yes, you can buy the platform off of an old arcade machine, but you'd still have to wire up a control box for it, and they're insanely heavy. They run about $400, if you can find them.

Nah, too hard to switch games on a machine... Of course, if money is truly no object, you'd buy a property just for your machines, and have at least one of each, and probably a couple hacked with the consoles and Stepmania and suchlike.

CF is the king, you can make a control box quite easily that shows up as a pad on xbox live and enables you to use the mic.

As you said, all pads "die", but metal pads are largely more repairable than others. Usually, since the panels have some open space around them, the primary culprit is dirt. Removing the arrow plexi and vacuuming in under there can work wonders. The other cuplrit is corrosion of the copper contact points (or rusting it it's made from non-stainless steel). Some steel wool and another vacuuming can again help here. The real serious problems come in the electronics. If they short out, though rare, it can be a pain to fix. The CF has all of its electronics stored in a separate control box with a simple 15 pin high density D-sub connector (Same as a VGA connector), which can be fairly cheaply replaced. This also allows you to build your own boxes if you are so technically inclined (and it's not that hard to do). On the other hand, the Afterburner is a self-contained unit, so swapping out electronics is considerably more difficult. However, you do not need to build your own control boxes if you want to use it for Xbox or PC.
