I have a universal mat and it seems that the down arrow will hit it self and hold it self and this is messing with my game. why is it doing this???

Short answer: It's broken
Long answer: It could a be a number of issues, from the material holding the two parts of the step-switch apart breaking down, to a crease in the pad that's holding down that arrow, or less likely, a short circuit further up the mat. You could attempt to troubleshoot the mat, but having done this a number of times, I'll tell you it's a lot less trouble and cheaper in the long run to get a new mat.
