Ok. I need some help pushing through this. I've been playing casually for a couple months and have made steady progress on light mode. (DDR MAX 2 for PS2) I can do well on all the 4 step songs and have gotten AA on most of them. But the 5 step songs are killing me. I'm not sure what the best way to progress is.
Should I keep playing the 4/5s in light mode until I can so most of the 5 foot ones or should I just move to standard mode and just push through it until I start getting it? I'm sure I'll keep improving no matter what and as I lose more weight (I've lost just under 30 pounds in 2 months) I'm sure they'll get naturally easier. But I'd love to get the maximum improvement I can out of my playing.
Any suggestions from those of you who have already past these early hurdles?

I'd say push through it. That's what got me through the 4-5 foot barrier, and it's what I'm doing at the 8 foot barrier I'm at now. Make sure you have the game set to fail at end of song, so you can play the whole way through without it cutting out on you. Find a song you can pass with a B or C and keep playing that one until it starts to click for you. If you know particular songs that are giving you trouble, or spots of songs you need help with, post them here and we'll give you suggestions.

Yes, push through as hard as you can.
Try a bit of Standard even too, the sooner you get well acquainted with 1/8th notes the better.
I'm trying to break the 10 foot barrier... and it kills me every time I play one, but I still give it my all.

Well, I gave it a shot this morning. I got a couple of Es, but it was pretty much one fail after another. Ouch. I think I need to see someone do them because I'm just not getting it. The 4 steps are a breeze, but the 5s are just impossible.
At least it's an interesting challenge.

Any song in particular? Any skill in particular? Are you having trouble reading the arrows fast enough? Are your feet getting tangled?
Pick one to pound on, preferably one that you can pass, but with a B or C. Attack that one until you can get an A. Unfortunately, there aren't many videos of people playing anything but the hardest Heavy songs, so you don't necessarily get any help from that.
Also, learn to use the training mode. Step the speed down a bit, turn on hand claps, and pick sections of the songs that are causing you difficulty. Start very slow, work out the proper footing, and increase the speed little by little.

Thanks so much for this thread. I've been stuck at the 4-5 foot range forever, so now I know what I have to practice to break through to the 6 footers.

My advice is watch people playing, it helps you get the rythm of harder songs.
I'm currently working on breaking the 11 foot barrier ( WOO HOO ITG!!!) but it's been a long road.

I haven't necesarily been stuck on 8 footers, but I have practicing them a lot and perfecting. I'm now starting AA a lot of 8 footers.
They use to be somewhat hard.
Practice, practice, practice!

I just wanted to say thanks for the advice here. I've finally broken through. I just couldn't get the 5's so I took some time off. When I came back, I just tackled the 5's in workout mode going straight down the list one after another regardless of how bad I was doing on any one song. Much to my surprise, I got the 5's really quickly. I can't AA any of them yet, but I can pass almost all of them. I can even get a few of the 6's. Very nice.
Thanks for the help.

I've been playing DDR for about a month and I'm getting A's on standard on most 6 footers now.
My biggest problem was reading the arrows, but I learned to get over that.
One thing that helped me was playing a few songs on heavy. After doing that, standard didn't seem so bad.
Another thing you might want to try is plugging your controller in (if you're playing from a home system) and play the game like that for a while. That helped me learn how to read the arrows, so once you jump back on that pad it doesn't seem so difficult.
Good luck!

Try out butterfly on standard then on heavy. Its the best song for progressing because the skill level doesnt jump up too high. It was the first heavy song i passed I passed it on heavy when i was just starting 5 steps on standard
