OK, so I've been playing DDR Ultramix (Xbox) for a few months and up to 5 foot songs on the Standard level, but I can see that it might help to learn some "tricks of the trade" as I try to progress through the more difficult songs on Standard and then the Heavy levels.
So, bottom line: What is a crossover? How do you know when to spin? What other funky things are there out there to do to pass these songs without killing yourself?!?

Crossover - a step pattern where you have to cross one leg over the other. Example, the pattern L, D, R. You could step it Left foot, right, right, but during a fast song that's very difficult to do. Instead, try Left, Right, and then turn your body to the right a bit and step with your left foot. If you can find a song that has a loNg series of L,D,R,D,L,D,R,D,L... you can really get a feel for how this works.
Spins - I still haven't quite gotten these, but the most common step pattern is something like L,D,R,U,L. Do the crossover for the L,D,R as described above, then bring your rigth foot back behind you to hit the Up arrow (You'll be facing away from the screen at this point. Keep turning, and bring your left foot ove rto the Left arrow, and voila! You've spun! The hard part is realizing that you have to read ahead a bit to see where to step after the spin, because it can take a second to refocus on the screen.
I'm playing at a 7-8 foot level, and haven't nailed spins yet, but learning crossovers definitely pushed me up from the 5 foot level to where I am today.

Thanks! You know, I've seen arcade players spin, but I dunno how they do it.

Definitely. The Super Star remix is pretty easy also. Although it has some wierd spins.
