Well I can't get the hang of crossover reading, but I can do them. My question is: how would I position myself for such moves as this: left, down, right, up, left? Sorry I like colors.

Right foot on the left, left on the down facing toward the left. Right foot steps the left, left steps down, right steps right, left steps up, and right steps left.
It may be less of a pain to just double step through that, though. You need to actually know that it is coming to be prepared for that.

Yeah a lot of those are really messing me up trying to do "correctly," so I may have to just stick to double stepping, although I hate getting off-balance.

That's a spin, not a crossover. So it would be LRLRL while spinning your body to the right (clockwise). You could do it as Sly says, but depending on what the next step is after that series, you could be in trouble.

Well, there are songs where it does work (Break Down! comes to mind), and there are many songs where it occurs within such a long stream that you don't even notice it (several times in Exotic Ethnic, at least twice in Rhythm & Police, several times in CSFILSM, at least once in Luv To Me (Disco Mix), etc., etc.) You are going to need double-stepping anyway as songs like HVAM, Daikenkai, and End of the Century require you to do long streams of eighths where alternating feet through the whole thing is not an option (unless you are the spinning king). A good song to practice the double stepping in is B2U Orchestra Groove (Oni). You have DDRMax, but it doesn't have the oni stepchart in it. Learn how to make an edit if you don't know how (it is easy, and I can answer any of your questions). Edit in this stepchart for the song: www.ddrfreak.com/stepcharts/stepchart.php?song=orchestra&difficulty=Challenge&mode=Single&code=Normal&Submit=SubmitJust focus on staying on balance and playing like you did before you learned crossovers (unless something sticks out as being something that you should cross over). At 150 BPM, it goes fast enough that it isn't trivial but slow enough that you should be able to focus on controlling your balance. Otherwise hammer at EotC and HVAM.

Alright, I'll worl on that, and probably make the edit. My only problem is EotC has so many jumps, and that is by far my worst aspect of DDR. HVAM isn't bad, but I'll see a crossover and it'll fly by too fast, but I'll still try and do and then I just F it up pretty bad.
Also, did you get my private message, Sly?

Damn! Are you kidding me? I kept thinking that it was way easier to double step in that song, but all I hear these days is "blah blah crossovers wrong blah blah."

There are a few things that you COULD crossover in the song, but it is better just to double-steps. Most of it you don't even have the option to crossover. If you do cross it over, you may be taking the next three steps with one foot, which will make the song even more draining. At most you should only ever be stepping twice with one foot (hence it is DOUBLE-stepping).

End of the mother fucking century pisses me off so much.
Could they have made a much more (step-wise) annoying song?!

End of the Century's steps really aren't that annoying. I still do kind of poorly on the song, but that is because I usually screw up a few of the jumps. I can easily FC (and sometimes PA) the 8th runs in that song. I know it seems crazy now, but eventually you just start to see the right moments to step twice and the song becomes far less intense. Really, there is less double-stepping going on than you think. You just need to know when to do it, and that comes with experience.
On controller, I got under 30 Greats and under 100 Perfects on EOTC. And that is on Judge Difficulty 6. And I really don't play Stepmania very much (well, I play it on foot quite a bit...).
