Hi everyone!
I have never played DDR before, but I have seen games that are like it at arcades and I have always been very interested in it.
I want to buy DDR for fun and to help me loose weight.
My questions are:
1. I have a playstation 2. Which DDR do you suggest buying?
2. Can you take it slow when starting out? Is there different workout levels?
3. What is the music like? Can I add my own?
4. What else do you suggest that I need to get or to know?

1.) I would probably get Max 2. I think it's the most beginner-friendly, it's how I learned.
2.) Well, it depends on what you mean. You can change difficulty levels, and it even has a Beginner for, well, beginners. Also, on training mode, you can slow down the music a lot.
3.) The music is mostly J-Pop (Japanese pop,) dance-club esque house music, and some euro-trance. Occasionally you'll get your oddity (Heaven is a...,) but that's what it mostly consists of. There is some hard techno here and there. You can't add your own songs, but you can edit steps to songs if you want.
4.) I guess all the extra thing you need to know is that if you're planning on getting the package deal, they don't include the greatest mats, but since you're just beginning it should suffice. I've only been playing since July, so I'm not the most experienced, but I can say to get good you have to be committed and really want to be good... Oh yeah, and if/when you start, it's going to be really tough for a while so don't give up or get impatient.

1. I would recommend Extreme or Max2, as they have beginner mode, MAX 1 does not. You'll most likely end up wanting all three.
2. Yes, there are a number of ways to alter the difficulty. There are 5 different levels that songs can have steps (Beginner, Light, Standard, Heavy, and Challenge), though not all songs have all levels of step. In addition, in Workout mode, you can specify three additional levels, which will alter where steps come in to give you a more steady workout, or more like the arcade steps. In training mode, you can alter the speed of the song (Not on Extreme) so you can practice certain portions of songs to help you understand how the steps work.
3. As SSC said, mostly J-Pop and Euro-dance, with a few exceptions. Extreme has more recognizable songs if that's important to you. You can't add your own songs unless you're playing one of the PC simulators, like Stepmania or DWI.
4. Start out simply, the game and one mat, until you are sure you want to continue with DDR. Some people just don't like it. You will be very bad at first, and wonder how anyone can play the game. We were all like that. Play through the training mode, and don't give up. I recommend setting the following options in the option menus. (Fail at end of song, no negative announcer comments). That way you can continue playing the song to the end even if you fail the steps, and the announcer won't yell at you (Which I find distracting and discouraging).
You'll also probably want to mod your first soft mat early on. Modding consists of fastening the mat to a board and covering it with a heavy vinyl so it won't slip around on your floor as much, and will let you play in shoes. It will be frustrating enough learning how to play without having to deal with your pad sliding all over the place.

On a strategy tip.
Listen to the music. Listen to the rhythm.
When I first started, I payed way too much attention to the arrows and timing. My third time playing I felt like a total jerk because it occured to me that this is supposed to be dancing, not some sort of cruel timing torture.
Find the beat. Step on the beat. Use the arrows as a guide.

ask the people who r selling it what they recomend Just because a store sells the videogame doesn't mean they've played it. Think about what you're saying before you post this.
