That term is used a lot around here, especially with the "newbies". A lot of the DDR crew here think that people who use the bar ALL the time, arnt really good players. Is this right or wrong? Me personally, I only use the bar when I absolutly need to, you know, to keep me from falling or when I'm really tired...any comments?

why is using the bar bad?
I play at home and thus dont have a bar to play with... and if I ever actually do the arcade route... I still don't intend to use the bar...
but...why is it bad?
I am not looking to cause a conflict here...I only ask because I seriously do not know.

Hmm.... Think of it as an extra leg. Is having 3 legs fair when playing DDR? lol

I don't have a bar at home and I get all my practice and play at there. I don't think I'd really use the bar. The one time that I did play in the arcade I didn't use it, so I think I'm alright with not using it. I can think of only one time I'd use the bar. And that's the times when I'd reach up for the ceiling in my room to stop myself from falling flat on my face or back.
Using the bar.........okay. This what I think. True, using the bar is like a legal cheat. But there are some people that don't have great senses of balance. Just because someone can't balance well, doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to enjoy DDR. There is one thing a bar hugger has to learn to do in order to do that. They have to learn how to switch off on hands and play from those positions. Again, using the bar is like a legal cheat, but don't forget to look at the techniques needed to do it. Especially someone using double mode. Not only do they have to switch hands with the turns, but have to deal with the lack of bar inbetween the two pads.
Just because someone uses the bar, doesn't mean they aren't skilled. While I'm sure there usually isn't a problem with arm length, that could come into play when trying to do some steps. This topic looks like it's going toward a negative view of using the bar, so I thought I'd bring my thoughts into it before the topic really got going into a full swing.

I dont want the topic to be negative or anything. The problem I have with people who are around my area, is that they think they're all cool and a lot better than everyone else, but they NEVER let go of the bar. It doesnt seem fair to me, because I only use it when I have to. I think that the bar is there for help, ya know? I dont care if people you use it for help, but what about those people who never let go of it? Maybe it's just the people around my area. In my opinion, using the bar all the time, for every song, seems just like an obsticle when playing, because it doesnt give the player that much freedom.

I don't know about j00 guys but once you like try to conisistently double A 9-10 footers, i had to start using the bar. I don't think it's cheating..i mean...it's there for a reason. It doesnt' say USE THE BAR ONLY FOR THESE PURPOSES on the game...just like speed mod debates, they're in the game..use em!

Thats true. Its like the speed mod thing. I use speed mod all the time to help me read the notes. But because I use it I dont say im better than the people who dont use it. Thats my point with the whole "bar raping thing"

I would need the bar and an extra set of legs to even consider finishing that one.

The bar is there so people don't back off and trip right? What is the point of using the bar anyways, you might as well buy DDR for PS2 and use the controller if you don't want to work at it.

You know what you should do? If those people that are constantly using the bar are playing songs that aren't really that difficult, you should tell them to try playing without using the bar and see how fast they fall. If they think they're the best and they're using the bar constantly, tell them to try not using the bar and take a picture of the results. I'm not poking fun at bar huggers, but if someone is so arrogant that they think they're the best while holding the bar, they should try without it and see how good they really are. I can see using the bar constantly on a 10 footer. When I try one, I nearly fall over. I can see the bar being useful there. Either that or I just need to get better.

Ive told them "devil". I mean, if you're on light, and youve been doing it for a while, I dont think you need the bar. I think it kind of ruins some peoples skills because they're so dependant on the bar for the easiest songs. thats they're deal though. The bar's good to have after completeing a hard song though, you can lean on it and relax ;D
