As I've mentioned I'm a new DDR player and I'm really struggling with the fast 8th notes in the intermediate level songs (high Light songs and Standard songs). I can do them if it's just one bit, but when there's a bunch it's like I just trip over myself and I can't even hear the beat in the music anymore. It's really frusterating and I know I won't move into the 'next level' until I get it.
Does anyone have any tips or can anyone recommend any songs that will be good for helping me master this? I found "Get Down Tonight" in Standard mode is something I can do and seems to be good so far - I can do it because the lyrics actually follow the 8th notes so it's easier for me to stay on beat. Other songs I start feeling like a clutz, but even "Get Down Tonight" I still only get a 'D'.
Also is it just me, or are some of the red and purple 'light' songs WAAAAY harder than some of the Standard songs? Some of them are just crazy! (at least in my newbie eyes.)

Heh I am *definately* not ready for heavy. I'm *barely* doing standard - it's the 8th notes that are holding me back from Standard even. I'll check out those songs, thanks.

Well see j00 got Max2 i think for PS2 right? Well...from what i remember, i haven't played in awhile so forgive me if i'm wrong, but the purple ones are challenge songs, that means they only have one difficulty cause they're specially made for the nonstop mode. It's like that in the arcades with Oni mode n' such. The Red songs on Max2 are like kakumei and Maxx Unlimited...and yeah...those are hard, especially Unlimited, Ohh and the Purple songs are usually like 6-7 feet so yeah...they're hard. As far as ways to learn about 8th notes or as i call em blue arrows, lol. Like go into training mode and Turn on Assist and maybe slow down the speed, that could help. i dont' know all of the songs on the version so i'm not sure about the rest. Shining Polaris is awesome though!

Oh that is great advice about slowing down the speed in training mode. I didn't even know you could do that! That is the big problem right now, is that when there are lots of quick 8th notes my brain doesn't even process them in time to even *try* to step. I'm sure slowing it down will help me "get it".

That's a good idea too. I was practicing today and I also need to "calm down" like the guy mocking you on the game says. Heh. Every time I see those notes I hit the pad so fast and furiously the thing slides all over the place.
I also think I need to get in better shape before I'll be able to really excel anyways. On some of the fast standard songs I can keep up with the fast notes now at the begining of the song even though I still get some boos, but by the end of the song I can't keep up because I just literally lack the stamina. But that's what it's all about.

Yeah, and don't forget assists, they rock when you need help.
But yeah...dont' panic, just move a little faster and you'll get it, cause all it is is a note in between 1/4 notes...so just interrupt your normal stepping with a faster movement.

I just wanted to post in case any DDR newbies look back at this thread at some point. What helped me get the 8th notes was going to workout mode with Standard difficulty. There I could continue to try the songs even when I was failing miserably, and move right on to the next song to practice more instead of going through a bunch of menus. (I guess training mode would probably work for this too.) I just kept trying even when I failed a song, stepping in. I found "Forever Sunshine" on standard an easy one to start with (I think it rates 4 or 5 feet on standard - it has a steady and not to fast tempo and breaks inbetween 8th note steps), and then moved up to "Dream a Dream" (or whatever it is) - a 6 foot song with LOTS of 8th notes but they are very well-defined by the beats, so it's an easy song to step-by-ear. Eventually it clicked. I hope that helps someone.

Honestly, the easiest way to learn 8ths and 16ths is too take a song like Dream-A-Dream and play it on heavy. I know that sounds crazy, but thats what I did to learn the rythms. Now for Gallops take on In The Navy on Heavy. Once you master those two you've got it made.

At first, many beginner players think that 8th steps are much faster than they actually are, and will panic the moment they see even a single trio of 8ths. For my friends and I, there wasn't really a trick to learning how to do them, one day it just "clicked" and after that we were able to do most Standard stuff.
Not even quite a year later, we're all Heavy players who constantly tackle 9 and 10-footers. It seemed impossible for us to get to that level when we were first starting out on light, but anyone can do it. Just keep on practicing...
