Hi all! I am new to this forum and I think it is great and I was just curious about the cheap pads and how long they will last?
I recently started DDR and I cant get enough of it. I purchased a generic $20 pad with my DDRMax2 and i play barefoot on a hardwood floor. I dont get hardly any slippage(is that a word??) so I plan on using it until it is on its last leg. so how long do these generic soft pads last??? Maybe eventually I will build my own as I get better but what do you all think:) Lisa

I agree with the 3 month rule for cloth pads. My first cloth pad, a Naki Dance Pad Revolution, lasted 3 months before the down arrow began to screw up past being able to tolerate. Of course, that's during my getting better stages. Right now at my level, I don't think it will last that long. I'd probably rip it open or something. Also, I wasn't using a cover, which is supposed to make a difference on it's life. From what I've heard, the Naki Dance Pad Revolution is one of the best cloth pads. At $20, it's a pretty good deal. But when the time comes, it will be worth your while to upgrade to something better.

Well, the kind you buy on e-bay for 5 dollars is OK, they last about a couple weeks depending how much abuse it gets. I bought some of those pads, and because i do 9 steps and such, the last about a week.

DDR DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION PREMIUM PAD V3.0 is the best pad on the market. Hmmmmm. Not quite sure about that. And what the heck keeps happening to my avatar, one minute its there ant the other its gone.

If your cloth pad is giving your feet problems, there are a number of options to take. The least expensive would probably be buy a cover for the pad. It's supposed to allow you to wear shoes. Shoes offer a HECK of a lot more support. The next least expensive would be to buy a soft foam insert pad. It offers a lot of cushion, which can be good because you're not stomping bone first into the ground and bad because your feet can shift around on it.
The next option is to buy a hard pad. I've never had one of these pads or tried one. I don't know much about how long they last, but you can use your shoes on it. The bad thing about it is it's still plastic in the end and will break eventually. The last option, that I can think of, is a metal pad. Shoes offer support on these pads.
Before making any decision on any of my suggested options, always always always RESEARCH first. You never know what is better than another brand. Check out on forums and look at what things are made of. That will increase your chance of getting the best for your money. Of course, there is one more option. Just give up DDR for a bit and heal. lol

Madcatz is teh suck, buuuuuurn your pad!
If it's possible, try to find the new $30 pad released by Konami. It'll have a picture of the Max2 game on the back, that's how you can tell it's the new one. It's not easy to find, but pick one up if you see it. It's arguably the best soft pad short of RedOctane
One problem is it won't work with a USB converter, but I don't think many people use USB converters ^^;;;

Speaking of Konami pads, I've heard that an offical metal pad is supposed to be released sooner or later. That's what I've heard anyway. It would make sense since the metal pad catagory is dominated by 3rd party makers.

Thanx guys, this thread is very useful. I'm considering the metal pad though. It seems like with the way these soft pads wear down, depending on how many times you replace it, or may need to...
the hard one might be the better choice... I'm guessing?
I use the el cheapo MadCatz for now though. The entire DDRMax2 set was a gift so I can't complain.

I can not complain about that since it is a gift. I purchased two Ignition v2 pads /w 2 hard foam inserts (inserts from levelsix.com) The pads were $60 total and inserts were $9 each. These pads are amazing; I have had them almost a year. Stepmania and max2 (console) all night long. B)

I have an El Cheapo Mad Catz pad, too, but I have my eyes set on the Ignition Pad (cuz I seriously can't afford a metal one anytime soon XD).
...Correction: I had TWO Mad Catz pads. The problem is, the Down arrow wore out on my first one within a week and a half. The hell. >.<
My second one is still kicking. I don't know how long it'll last, but I haven't folded it up or anything... cuz I know folding just makes the pad worse. Hopefully, it'll last me long enough to scrounge up enough money for the Ignition V 2.0 Pad...

The best soft pad is the RO ignitions, best hard pad you can buy is the cobalt flux.

I've got a cheap RaveStation softpad and a couple of days ago I officially decided it was FUBAR (fouled up beyond all repair/recognition) when I had to get off it and shake it to stop it spinning round the menus in Stepmania due to serious ghost-step problems! (to be fair I have played the hell out of that pad - had it for I'd guess 18 months at least)
I've got an Ignition pad on the way (might not be the redoctane branded one, will find out when it gets here), should get that tomorrow - looking forward to that. I also have a really AWFUL "DanceSation" hard plastic pad but I don't use it because it's truly horrific (noisy as hell along with a few other major issues).

Gamestop carries both the Redoctane and Naki pads which are both pretty good.
