Actually - because this article is so nicely laid out I just forwarded it to all my hockey players. I've been trying to stress to them the importance of ddr and getting our kids physically active not just in hockey but in every day life. A lot of my team is overweight and or just slow. It's really sad. It's also really frustrating for me to coach them. I've offered my team to borrow any game + pad for whatever system since Doug and I have like 20 pads and god knows how many games. The parents looked at me like I was nuts though when I offered so maybe this artice will give me an extra grain of credibility.

Hope so - good luck with that! The poor parents probably just don't get it. Although I can sort of follow their thought. If I'm a parent with an overweight kid, I probably tell him one reason for it is because he plays too many videogames-- so I sign him up for hockey, great sport --to get him active, and then his coach recommends a video game!?!?! Whaa...whaa....WHAT?? And since I'm not listening to her very closely, I think she's crazy!...LOL!!! Maybe a demo is in order. Next time you have the team over invite their parents and pull it out. Since over 1/3 of adults are obese, I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt a few of them to take a few turns on the pad too! And then maybe they would want to borrow it - for themselves!

Since I work in health care I'm always on the lookout for the research showing all the benefits of DDR, and this is the best summary of all the studies etc. I've seen yet, published at U of CA. I know some kids around here have done or are doing school projects around DDR so maybe this could be useful. So check out the Evidence! (oh yeah and the reference to GuM) www.comm.ucsb.edu/faculty/lieberman/exergames.htm
