hey everyone, I have been kicking this idea around for almost seven years now since I first got my drivers license. I have always wanted a motorbike but I have also always been a little afraid of them. I am pretty sure I have my mind made up now and I am going to be taking my learners test soon but I had a couple questions and I wasent sure if anyone here was a bike enthusaist or not but I figured I would ask anyways.
is it safe to ride a motorbike in the winter? (as safe as motorbikes get anyways, I know there is always the chance of ice and you only have two wheels instead of 4 but its just somthing I am wondering)
I stand arpox 5' 10" tall, I weigh 285 (working on losing still) am a male and am 23 years old this augest. I plan to use the bike mostly for transport inside city limits though I will be taking it on the highway on a fairly regular basis to visit friends that live just outside town. can anyone recomend a good starter bike for me?
what kind of price range can I expect to pay for my first "learner" bike?
anyone live in canada B.C that can tell me how you get in your practice time if you dont know anyone else who rides a bike? do you still have to have an experienced rider with you at all times like when you get your drivers licence (for a car)?
thats about all I can think of for now, I am going up to the DMV tomorow to pick up my training books and am looking for a Motorcycle Saftey Foundation in the Kamloops area so I can take their saftey courses. any other feed back would be welcome and aprecated, thanks all.
best wishes.

What are you looking at getting? Crotch Rocket, Cruiser, Moped, Chopper, ect?
I know that each state has different laws, but I am not sure how Canada handles their laws reguarding bikes, so you may want to look up the current laws.

I would love a sportbike, (crotchrocket if you want to refer to it like that ) I am pretty sure I can go somewhere between 500 and 1000cc for my learners and then up to 1500cc with my full licence, I am currently looking at the suzuki GS500.

Motorcycles are amazing fun... I rode one all last summer. I never had a bad time on it and I think it is definitely a good idea. I rode a Suzuki Intruder 800cc... its kinda like a harley fat boy.

that cool, I am not really into the harley look personally but I do like bikes in general. if I had my choice I would definatly go with a sport bike though, I love the sleek look and from the reading I have been doing they can handle the kinds of roads I will be riding.

As to your question of riding a bike in the winter safe?
No, you would have to have a death wish to ride a sport bike in the winter. Even rain is pretty dangerous. Think of how easy it is do dump a bike in the rain or a bit of sand on the road. Now multiply that by 1000 and you get winter driving.

Crotch rockets are SO FUN, but SO dangerous. Just look at what recently happened to Ben Roethlisberger. Accidents can happen, so be careful d00d.

Yeah I'm not a huge harley guy either... but its what was available that my parents werent using :-P i definitely dont have enough cash right now to get a bike...
Like they tell you , on a motorcycle you have to assume the people in the cars dont see you.

I have ridden on the back of amotorcycle lol one of my exboyfriends had one, it was a honda gold wing I think lol. he got in a really bad accident on it and well his knee was hamburger but some how they managed to put it somewhat back together. I think of them as spam machines they scare me to drive them myself. I guess I dont' like the thought of me driving one, but I have no problem riding the bitch seat. My friend just got a moped he loves it, he drives it in Seattle, but lots of people in Seattle have mopeds. Anyways just some experience.

I do understand most of the dangers of motorbikes, I figured winter was out, didnt realize rain was as bad as it is though. acording to everything I have read, riding a bike is no more dangerous than driving a car, bikes actually have fewer acidents than cars do, however, bike acidents result in more injuries than cars so aparently it equals out to being the same, I dont know for sure but I do know I want a bike. I have always wanted one. they use to scare me but the more I think about it the more I really want to get one and learn to ride.

from everything I have read, that is actually to be expected, its part of the "learning curve" its the main reason you dont buy an expensive bike right of the bat. but if everyone who tried to ride a bike died then there wouldnt be any riders at all and motorbikes wouldnt exist! so the way I see it is I am helping the world grow and learn and accept motorbikes......or somthing like that anyways finally got my manuals yesterday so I can start studying them, most of it is just a brush up, its just the actual bike stuff that I have to learn. I will keep updating as I progress with this. best wishes all.

I would personnally want one of those one that just go really fast, and I would want to have to lean down not up to drive it, and I would want one of those cool suits that match the motercycle, plus it would have to a green colour,
I've put some thought into this.

ya, harley bikes are definatly not my style, I cant stand the sound or look of them. if there wasent anything else aviable I would ride it just because I like bikes so much but I would much rather a sports bike. www.sportrider.com/bikes/2004/2004-suz-g5-02-2.jpgthats the bike I want, although I would get it in dark green or black if possable, I dont think it came in those colours but there is always an air brush around somewhere. anyways I am trying to find a local *MSF so I can take their courses so I know I am ready to ride before I even get on the bike and I have to start saving for all my expenses. on the upside though bikes are alot cheaper than cars (up front cost) but the insurance costs are a bit higher. I just know I am looking forward to getting my first bike, I am in a bunch of bike forums learning all I can and trying my best to make the most of it. best wishes all. *(MSF stands for Motorcycle Saftey Foundation)
