hmmmm... well, there are a TON of really popular series out there.... I tend to just pick up a series that looks interesting. Most of the time they are pretty amazing, and sometimes you get a bad apple... So where would you start? Anime is really diverse. you have all sorts of genres...children's, comedy, drama, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, the explosively cute, romance...you name it. Some of my all time favorites are: Full Metal Alchemist, Chobits, Evangelion and Tenchi Muyo Some extremely popular ones I've seen are Death Note, Steel Angel Kurumi, Akira, Ghost in the Shell... to name a few. There's a really awesome site I have found... anime6.org/m6/index.php?_action=cat_browse&sid=3You can stream like pretty much all anime there... but the quality isn't the best... It will give you a great start though.

Death Note, Naruto, and Bleach are available on Hulu.com. The quality there is much better.
I personally enjoyed Hikaru no Go, but I'm a Go fan, so an anime based on the game is obviously going to hold more interest for me than others.
Movie-wise, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Ninja Scroll are good, along with pretty much all of Miyazaki's movies (Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Naussica, etc)

Pretty much what xstatic said, there's a wide variety of genres in anime, so there's bound to be something that suits your fancy. My advice would be to start out in the more mainstream anime. Watch some of that, take note of what you like in each one, and then search those niche genres. To make things easier, look at your own hobbies and look for anime related to that (if you like board games, Hikaru No Go is a really good one to start out with, as abrannan pointed out. If you like Tennis, et cetera). Do a bit of research. Anime is one of the few art mediums that has something for everyone.
My personal picks: -Tenchi in Tokyo -Rouroni Kenshin -Dragon Ball (the original) -Most Studio Ghibli movies -Tokyo Pig (yes, I admit it. It's Disney on LSD)

Is Pokemon anime? I liked that. And has anyone heard of Witch Hunter Robin? I actually kind of enjoyed that too.

Yeah, I have an entire dvd cabinet full. But I close it and lock it so it's not an eyesore in the living room.

Off subject, anyone wanna play Mario Kart. FC's in my signature.
On subject, what do you think of the American made live action movies based on anime to come? Spielberg is doing Ghost In The Shell (I heard), DiCaprio is doing Akira, and the new Dragon Ball movie is all but complete. I'm just curious what the more dedicated anime fanbase thinks.

I'm not a hardcore anime fan, but I doubt these movies will measure up. For one, American audiences aren't ready for most Japanese movie plots, and the studios won't let the scripts through unless they play to the most common moviegoers tastes. Two, the medium just doesn't translate from animation to live action (See: Speed Racer). Anime is overexaggerated and outlandish, it just doesn't look right done with CGI (See: Speed Racer, 300).

Isn't there a Japanese Death Note live action movie? Was that well received?

LOL I've watched it. It was very well received IN JAPAN... ALSO they made a live action Grave of the Fireflies. The trailer was constantly on tv.
