I was running errands today with my oldest daughter Lia and the baby, and Lia talked me into going to the arcade for a few minutes to play their DDR machine. We've never played it in the arcade before, but I try to do about an hour a day at home. So we took turns playing it, I'd hand her the baby and play a few songs, then it would be her turn. There were some teenagers who played a little, and when we were playing they watched us, and Lia said that they were staring at me with open mouths and said, "I can't believe that oldie can dance without using the bar!" OLDIE??!? Well I never, I'd like to see them say that to my face because scorewise I was kicking their butts! LOL All of them hugged the bar the whole time they were dancing, but I've never used the bar. Not sure which is more difficult, but not using the bar is how I learned.
I just thought it was kind of cool that an "oldie" like me could amaze a few teenagers. ;D

People who play at the arcades tend to rely on the bar a little too heavily. Heck, when I went to the arcades and played no bar, people seemed surprised that I could do 10's and 11's barless (and I could do better if I hadn't been off the pad for 4 weeks.) Some of them even looked a little scared when I made it through the 32nd run on bloodrush no bar. Anyway, using the bar can make the game easier stamina wise (especially if you've got more arm strength), but only if you learn to adapt to it. Heck, I tried to use the bar and it nearly killed me on an otherwise pathetically easy song. It's really just a matter of how you've been... uh... raised? (But us no bar players are still a heck of a lot cooler. )

Wow, I'd like to see someone play a 10 or 11 without the bar. That would be pretty amazing to watch. Not to knock the kids who were using the bar when they were playing, but they were sitting on the bar and stepping to Beethoven on Light and bombing after 30 seconds every time - well, I was a newbie to DDR a few months ago too, but it seems like you don't get a good workout when you rely on the bar like that. ;D But they were young and cute, so they don't need to worry about working out yet. LOL
