Play the arcade version. It's a better workout. Has better songs. It's more difficult. This is my first post here. Hello.

Depends on how you play. I use the bar in the arcade so I actually get a more physical workout when I play @ home without the bar. I think I've built some upper body strength if anything by becomming an arcade player.... but that's an expensive hobby for some people...

I just don't have the time/money to go to the arcades. I've been trying to get there on the cheepo days (something like $.10 or .20 a game on monday evenings), but I still just haven't found the time.

You might find that your scores get way...way worse. I used to play home version a lot. I had AA'd DDRMAX, and I go to the arcade for the first time and got B's on songs I had AAA'd

I've played at the arcade once on an extreme. I'd like to say I think a good portion of my bullcrap scores was bad pads. I really had to smash the front and back pads. Anyway, the songs I played... I played Colors on Challenge, AA'd at home with about 15 greats, failed it at the arcade in about 25 seconds. Twinbee, black flag at home, C at this machine... Last was sakura, AA'd with 40 something greats, failed about halfway through...
Yes, part of it was probably just me being an arcade newbie, but I give part of the credit to the pads too.
BTW, my sister confirmed the poor condition of the pads soon after due to an end of the year class party at Brunswick Zone. She said she played almost as good as she does at home, rather than failing every song.

The reverse works to. I play Arcade so much, if I play on a foam pad, I end up sucking.

The arcades near me that have DDR are the epitome of sketch, and they don't maintain their machines well. It's cheaper and easier for me to play at home. Plus, I'm 30, and people look at me funny when I play at the arcade. Debatable, but I'd love to hear your evidence to back up your claim. Well, now, that depends on the mix you've got near you, doesn't it? Sounds like a reason not to play at the arcade to me .

there are a few reasons I dont play at the arcade, first off the pads suck at my local ruckers, the lexan (or what ever they use) is so warped that your foot actually sinks into the pad as you play, the pain is chipped everywhere, the wood is splintering and torn apart and in general its just not a very good machine.
another reason is that I weight 285 pounds..... while I try to not care so much about my looks I know what fat people look like while playing on a DDR machine in public and I dont want to look like that.
at home I can play for hours at at time (and I normally do) but in the arcade its like 75 cents for 3 songs, average song is about what? 1-2 mins? so 75cents for 6 mins, at that rate I would be shelling out 7.5 dollars an hour to play on the arcade machines (75 cents = 3 songs, 3 songs = aprox 6 mins of play, 6 x 10 = 60 or 1hr, .75x10 = 7.5) and I normally play for 2 to 4 hours, so 7.5 x 4 = 30 dollars a session, that pretty steep considering I like to play on a daily basis. home version is much cheaper (in the long run) and I can always add a new mix to my collection when they release if I want more songs.
so thats my blurb on why I dont normally play arcade.
best wishes all

A half hour of DDR at the arcade is more of a workout than an hour and half of DDR on home version...for me anyway. And I guess I don't use DDR for weight less anymore like I used to...just to compare scores with friends...

Maybe there's something I'm missing... how is it much more of a workout?

Maybe there's something I'm missing... how is it much more of a workout? For one thing, you actually have to pick up your feet to play it. On a regular foam pad, you can go slide crazy and hit the arrows. Often times, you can hit all 4 arrows simply by placing your feet in the right spot. On the machine, your forced you plant your feet down in order for it to hit. This causes your body to have to move more for the same song on home version pads. More movement = more workout.

maybe you can slide in socks? But on my foam mats I play barefoot and if I don't lift my feet they will stick and won't move fast enough. On my metal pad I play in shoes and still have to lift and plant...but then again I have the afterburner which has deeply recessed arrows...

Meh... I don't foot slide. I actually move my feet for every step, and bend down and hit arrows with my hands when there's more than 2... Kinda to practice for when I DO get chance to go to the arcades. Looking at your reasoning and based on my playing strategy, it's really probably not much more of a workout for me.

Well that's because we play the same way and we're about the same skill level (I think?). We've both basically hit the didder wall...

as for me I play barefoot most of the time, some times i wear socks but I still have to plant my feet to play. I practice at home and my arcade skills go up (when I do play arcade) it just takes a song or two to get into playing an arcade mat instead of my home mat. honestly the workout is the same, except at home I have an unlimited supply of water I dont have to pay for, my own personal fans and I can rip off as hard as I want to without a care about what other people thing of me. when I workout (almost every day) my shirt is litteraly soaked with sweat before I am done, its a great feeling but not exactly my most proud or freshest moment, definatly not somthing that I want to share with some random passer by.
arcade is fun when your with friends and just want to goof around and have a good time, it can be fun for chalanging yourself to but I think I will stick with my home version, besides if I really wanted to I could just build a hard pad (or buy a CF when I get the money) and throw a trick bar on it and get the same arcade experience, I doubt it would make much of a diffrence in my playing though.
one other reason I dont workout at the arcade, I havent had a chance to really inspect the dance pads but I doubt they are water tight, I sweat ALOT when I play, my pads at home are all one peice of plastic on top of foam, there is little to no chance of me ever shorting them out by sweating. the arcade? I am not so sure, espically considering the condition of my local machine. who knows, I am moving to edmonton soon here so mabie I will start to play more arcade then but for now I love my home pads!

I meant to note that on the Dedicab for ITG is is very easy for anyone with a shoe size slightly bigger than mine to hit multiple arrows at once by angeling their foot over the bridge. I watch the guys do it all the time. I have tried to do it but my feet are too small to arc over the bridge and hit both arrows. I like using my hands anyways, it's so fun.

sadly I can actually multi-arrow on the local extreme machine, the bridge between the arrows has been so warn down and bent that anyone can, like I said, the machine is in bad condition.
