I can't believe that I now love calorie counting. Why did I never accept the concept before? Why do so many people look down on calorie counting or say that they don't believe in calorie counting?
DDR taught me to calorie count. Whether or not it's totally accurate it still gives me a good base to plan my food intake.
I've had a lot of jobs in the nutrition and dietary fields so I had a head start in knowing the calorie content and portion sizes of most food items one encounters at restaurants, home and fast food places. I just always had this kind of big headed attitude that calorie counting just wasn't for me, as if I were above it or something.
We all have a lifestyle and basal calorie requirement and when we exceed it, we gain weight. Not counting calories is like spending your paycheck without knowing how much your rent and utilities are going to cost. Not understanding and tracking your calories can get you in trouble like when you don't track your bank balance while you blissfully write checks without adding it all up.
DDR allows me to adjust for what I'd like to eat. If I know something's coming up, like a vacation or a party, I add an extra workout that matches what I think I'm going to eat. I tell myself it's like putting money in the bank to save for a trip or a present. I always try to earn my calorie indulgences before I eat the extra calories instead of making it up later because when I eat extra food or something like cake or pizza, it's harder to do DDR after.
I never liked having to clean my room before going to spend the night at a friends house. I resented my mom for making me do that. I never wanted to do my homework on time, I used to scramble to finish stuff on the bus. This led to school struggles and sometimes poor grades. Putting off excercise or eating junk food before earning it or just not caring about the amounts of food and the lazy days I spent led to being 150 pounds overweight after 25 years of this behavior.
It's been a challenge my entire life to count calories and to excercize but DDR really changed that for me with it's easy to track calorie/distance/time counters and the fact that it makes excercising time fly by.
If anyone needs encouragement or support with calorie counting just let me know.
