I know I know - tanning is bad for you... but I would like to get a bit of a tan to bring in the summer with - as I have been called pasty white girl by all of my latino friends lately. Does anyone here tan, and if so - my question is this: what tanning lotion do you use? Those bottle are so expensive and the cheapie ones don't seem to give me any color whatsoever.
thanks!

I used to tan all the time (I'm actually going to get started again soon). Honestly, it's best to buy the lotions they sell at whatever tanning place you go to; a lot of them won't let you use outside lotions anyway (it ruins their beds or something, I dunno). The bottles will last you a while, plus they're specially forumulated for indoor tanning (check the back of the bottle).
I used Australian Gold, the type I picked up was about $25. They get waayyyyy more expensive than that, but a bottle under $30 will do fine.

personally I always end up with a decent tan weither I want it or not. most people will probably think its the worst way to get a tan but I use to always work outside with my grandfather in the garden before he passed on, now I have my own garden and the effects are the same. spend time outside and you will get a tan. personally I always think the taning place tans look fake anyways, they are either to dark and you can tell it was an inside tan or they are to light and you brown up in the sun anyways.
while I am aware of the risk for skin cancer and other problems with being in the sun I refuse to use sun tan lotion when I go out. I have only ever had a burn twice in my life and both times were due to my own stupidity.
anyways I guess this didnt help much, hmmmm, well my recomendation is to save your money and let nature do its thing.
there we go.
best wishes all.

I use beach bum rum by california tan. It has enhancers in it so even if you don't go in the tanning bed you sill still get a lil color. plus it has shimmers in it. It also works out side too. It cost me around $30, and it came with shower gel enhancer. But that is a level two lotion, you prolly need a level one. The level one tanning lotion I used was hempology, it was by california tans as well. The outside lotions will ruin the tanning beds. Most tanning salons have small samples tho like .50 cents and you can kind of figure out what you like before you buy a huge bottle. It should be enough for one tanning session. Also if you have tattoos then a great way to cover them is by using spf lip gloss that they sell at the salon. They can reccomend the right one as some of them will get sticky and stick to the bed. Do you have spray tanning in your area? Most salons around here offer it and it is supposed to be a great alternative to tanning beds as it is UV free. It isn't supposed to turn you orange either. Well I hope that this has helped out.

You also live in Kamloops, which is a good bit further north than most of the rest of us. You don't get as much direct sun as those of us at lower latitudes. If you tried pulling off no sunscreen in Texas, for instance, you'd probably deeply regret it.

out of curiousty, what consatutes direct sun light? I would think any time you can see the sun and are not under shade or in a house or anything like that it would be direct sunlight. as for temp, you may be right, I dont know as I have never even left my province let alone my country a tip on sun tan lotion I heard via the grape vine (my doc hates it when I dont use sun screen) SPF 35 is the highest you ever need to go, anything over that is just useless and you are paying for a higher number that has no effect. I could be wrong about this as well, and I am sure some people will ask why they would even bother to make it if it dosent do anything. but that is just what I heard so I though I would pass it along.

WOW!!! thats a bit much!!! yeah I went to this one salon and I loved them they had great prices and everythign, and with every purchase of a bottle of lotion you get one free tanning session. If you are like really snow white white, you should prolly go for about 10-15 minutes the first couple of times depending on if the have new bulbs or not. But I do reccomend the hempology by california tans to start then go to beach bum rum, I love them both and the beach bum rum smells oh so good. My salon is Chez Soleil but there prolly isn' tone where you live but if there was I would reccomend them.

well - take your skin as a marshmellow - you cook it over a campfire just right and it becomes a golden brown...too long and SIZZLE BIOTCH! toast.

Heh, I'm hispanic so I have naturall tan skin. Lucky me. There's really not much to tanning. Just be out in the sun a lot and where skin showing clothing. It doesn't need to be a blisteringly bright day to get a tan, and if you're out in the sun everyday for a week, you'll see a good difference.
Oh, I don't use sun screen or lotion, but that's just me.

If you tried pulling off no sunscreen in Texas, for instance, you'd probably deeply regret it. Yeah. The closer you are to the equator, the more "direct" sunlight you get (at least, if I remember correctly from school...). Think of the Earth as a beach ball and the sun as a flashlight. If you shine the flashlight on the center of the ball (the "equator", the brightest point of the ball is that spot dead-center. The sides of the ball rounding away from the center are dimmer because they are not getting direct light. That's the best way I can think of to explain the concept of varying degrees of direct sunlight over the surface of the Earth. I know also that the poles are seasonally exposed to direct sunlight, too. I live in Phoenix, Arizona, and spending any significant amount of time outdoors without sunscreen is like asking to get melanoma. I don't go outdoors for long periods of time (or much at all....too hot!), but I always at least put sunscreen on my face (usually a SPF+ moisturizer), and the times when I know I'll be out in the sun for more than a few minutes, I'll wear full sunblock (at least SPF 30), and try to avoid the middle of the day when the sun's rays are directly overhead.

Good luck-- I am also pasty white, but with the added bonus of being genuinely allergic to the sun. If I'm out without sunscreen, I break out in hives. I went on vacation to North Carolina last week and spent the whole week applying 50 SPF sunscreen, but still came home with a little of a tan (for me anyway-- no one else probably can tell the difference. Heck, I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't noticed the tan line underneath the ring I always wear.)

If you know that tanning is bad for you, then why do you do it? People know the risks of skin cancer and if you've been in High School recently then I'm sure you've seen disturbing pictures. I don't get it.

Come take a trip to Germany and you'll never want to fake tan again. I swear, just about every girl under 30 is a walking carrot.
