In a recent study by Levine and colleagues (1999), energy expenditure was measured in 7 non-obese volunteers during chair rest, and while sitting in the same chair chewing calorie-free gum at a rate of 100 MPM (mastications per minute). The basal metabolic rate at rest was 58 + 11 kcal per minute. During a 12 minute episode of chewing, metabolic rate rose to 70 + 14 kcal per minute, an increase over resting of approximately 20%. As a comparision, walking a mile in an hour basically doubles energy expenditure over resting values. arbl.cvmbs.colostate.edu/hbooks/pathphys/digestion/pregastric/chewwork.html

*chews gum*... well....it's not calorie free gum... it's less than 5 cal per stick and sugar free...the curbing of the appetite alone was an appeal for me to start chewing gum again.. tho I somehow feel like a valley girl.

Yay. I chew gum all the time. Especially at work, where I use it as a detourrant from picking at the fries

100 MPM is *fast* gum-chewing. I probably average about 50-60 MPM.

I like to chew gum ^.^. I don't get to a lot anymore simply because of my damned retainer, but since I threw it in the trash yesterday and I won't be getting another one for about two weeks, I can certainly go ahead and start now :-P.

I was in choir and chewing gum was very taboo!! Before I was in choir there was a different teacher, he taught band and choir (he is still the band teacher to this day), anyways if he caught you chewing gum in his class he would make you take it out and put it under your seat or desk, lol the janitors worst nightmare!!! He was also the teacher that took milk away from someone at the beggining of the year and stuck it in the piano, forgot until like the last month of school and they opened up the piano cause no one could figure out what that funk was and there was the milk. He got an unopened milk and put it in the band room as a momento. Hmm I wonder if it's still there, how gross would that be, it would be almost like 9 years old..... Anyways I couldn't chew gum till like last March when I met my best friend and he chews gum constantly, he got me to start chewing gum again lol. It is good to chew gum after eating cause it acts like a tooth brush!! I have never had a cavity in my life and I am 26, knock on wood. I take very good care of my teeth lol. Anyways I have read that before too that gum curbs your cravings. So I try to chew gum when I think I am hungry. My favorite kind gum is watering kiss mints. It is so good, they have it at the asian market in seattle and they are from Japan. Xylitol is the sweetner. They come in like 5 different flavors but my favorite is Peach mint and green apple mint, it sounds gross but they are oh so yummy. It is like they took out the minty flavor but left the mint feeling. Anyways it always make my purse smell good. They have it at www.jlist.com along with melon pocky!!! and other pockyflavors you can't get here. A word of warning so no one is offended there is Hentai and Yaoi too, but lots of Japanese snacks. (Japanese porn) They have sesame flavored pocky, I gotta try that lol. Anyways yeah!

That's odd. Chewing gum makes me hungrier from all the salivating.

I have an oral fixation, so I always have to have something in my mouth (insert perverted joke here). So gum makes me less likely to much on chips, or other empty calorie foods.

I've got the same problem pyro. I tend to spend most of my day at work chewing on my phone cord or on a pen cap. I get comments here and there about being careful or I'm gonna get shocked, etc etc, but I can't help it. As soon as I stop actively thinking about not chewing on something, BAM, I'm chewing on something.
