Okay, quick health bits :
I weigh 150 pounds. I'm 5' 5".
I own DDR EX and an Ignition Pad.
I've been trying to make a simple 2000cal regimine that consists of about 32 songs. I basically stick to both Max's, looking to unlock Legend of.
So, I actually hit the 2000 cal in 32 songs figure yesterday morning. However, there was a solid amount of soreness in my legs all day, and my ankles hurt today.
It's nothing new. Exerting myself physically more tends to result in soreness, and I've never really gone as far as I did yesterday.
So with that in mind, I'm just curious as to how much is "too much". I'm looking to lose some weight, but I really don't wanna cause any physical damage to my body en route.
The soreness should be gone by either tomorrow or the next day, and I'm sure if I keep this regimine up, it won't result in any soreness at all on subsequent attempts, and I'll probably step it up s'more (add another 16-song set later in the evening or something).
I just wanna make sure I don't go too far. I don't have very thick ankles or wrists so workouts always tend to strain those more than anything else.
Anyhoo, any advice would be much appreciated.

I'll start off by letting you know you are most definately not burning 2000 calories in your 32 song set. That number is probably closer to 300-350. Sorry to break it to you I wouldn't worry too much about over exhurting yourself, but just be cautious. I'm sure every DDR player gets pains from time to time, but don't push yourself too hard. I think it's safe bet when you get really short of breath to stop, other than that your body is just getting used to the physical activity. Out of curiosity, how long have you been DDRing for?

Are you doing it without shoes? Sometimes the lack of support hurts my legs also.. Just a thought. I'm probably one of the less educated members of that topic on this forum.. I've never even taken health. Wait for Ab

2000 is, IMO, way too ambitious. Unless you are eating a ton of calories a day, your body will not be able to keep up with the exertion long term, especially if you're trying to do it in 32 songs. Cut back on your difficulty a little bit, but still give yourself some 2-3 song "sprints". And remember to take time off so that your body can heal and rebuild damaged tissue.

1. I never push myself too far in the short term (e.g. I never work out sore muscles. I'm also skipping today because of some slight soreness in my ankles)
2. I'm well aware I'm not really getting 2000 calories out of this =3 (What's the figure for, arcade machines?)
3. I play on a hard foam pad with socks. I don't think that pad would last more than 2 days playing like that with shoes on ^_^
4. I've been playing DDR longer than I'll admit to, tho I've owned the home edition for a little less than a year and my current copy for about two months. I've owned a couple of pads, tho I've noticed the Ignition style pads only last me about 1-2 months.
Usually I'd do 1000 "cals" in 25 songs, but my impatience has led me to try to cut that number down as much as possible. My best is 16 songs, of course, and I could theoretically get that down to 15, but I think I'll draw the line there. =3
It's really more long-term damage I'm worried about.

I was gonna edit my post instead of replying twice, but in my experience the edit never gets read and I end up replying twice anyway...
Is there anything that IS a good way to gauge how many calories you're burning? I've seen a few pulse wrist watch thingies but I'm not sure if any of them are any good in their calorie measurements...

I always just go to a calorie counting website when I feel like knowing how many calories I've burned. www.caloriesperhour.com is a great one because they have different levels of things for however hard you work out. Just choose your activity ( which I would call DDR aerobics of a sort - anybody disagree? O.O ) and then set for how long you did it, and voila! You have your estimate of calories burned. If you're looking for something that could tell you immediately, like something that you attatch to your body, those sorts of things are out there, but I don't know too much about them, so I'll let somebody else who does take that one.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about how many calories some machine says you've burned. Your body has it's own calculations. Just work out for 45 minutes at a level that keeps you sweating, and breathing hard, and the calories take care of themselves.

Yeah, the ITG calorie counter is kinda amusing. I wish there was a way to turn it off so it wasn't always there on the screen, though!

This page sorta of explains the difference www.diabetic-lifestyle.com/articles/mar04_burni_1.htmLow-impact would be some of the lower level songs, and high impact would definitely be some of these crazy high intensity songs. according to this page: www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.htmlhigh impact will burn about 3.2 calories/lb per hour and low impact will burn about 2.3 calories/lb per hour dependent on your metabolism, but its generally a good figure to work with as a basis for how much exercising your doing. This is dependent on a consistent effort during that hour, so you don't want to spend too much downtime between songs.

The only time I thnk your over doing it is if you exercise every hour of your life. Soreness is normal, especialy when you first start or when you lagged on exercise and start exercising again.

Gawd, you guys should see me after I run one lap around a basketball court. I'm panting and sweating and dropping to the floor with each step. I'm so out of shape it's ridiculous ^_^ After DDR, I usually just stretch every which way or pace around and it relieves some of the lactic acid i've built up in my legs. I like to mix it up a little too--if you're DDRing for fitness, take a day off every so often just to either relax, or exercise a different part of your body. Whatever you do... DO NOT use that icy hot cream junk. It BURNS!!! OUCH!!!

I've been playing a week and my legs have been sore since the day I started.
However, with every exercise, this is normal. If you're out of shape (like I am) you're using muscles that you've rarely used before and you're doing activity that your body's not used to doing. You're stepping out of your comfort zone, so to speak.
Just keep at it!

If you overdo any workout, it's bad for you. This applies to DDR and everything else.

That's not a result of too much sex, that's a result of sex with the wrong person, and I'm going to nip this in the bud before it gets out of hand. *LOCKED*
