Are bagels good/bad for you, health-wise?

Calorie dense, high sugar and other simple starches, encourages the use of a lot of butter or cream cheese. My vote is bad.

I enjoy a whole wheat bagel with fat-free cream cheese for breakfast sometimes. I tastes pretty good. There are many different kinds so choose wisely. I watch out for the calories and serving size. Some companies list one bagel as 2 servings!! Like who eats half a bagel?? -M

I sometimes eat them with ultra low fat cream cheese... or honey, or jam. I don't think they're as bad as if you smear fattening stuff all over them.

Well, I don't think bagels are horrible, but they're not exactly great either. They're nutritional value is usually nil, as most are completely just refined flours and such, and as abrannan said, the usual complementary butter/cream cheese/name-your-"evil"-here doesn't exactly help things. But certainly, one every once in a while isn't bad, and devoiding yourself of certain types of foods isn't exactly the safest thing to do for either mind or body.
So, in short, they're fine as long as they're don't become a habit or excuse to binge. Just have one every once in a while, and be done with it. Savor the treat, yeah? ^^;
And, if you can rock out on some whole wheat bagels, more power to you. ^_^

I had no idea how many calories were in a typical bagel until a few years ago. I could easily eat 2 or 3 in the morning. That would be more calories than a typical fast-food dinner. Ouch! Now I skip the bagels. If I want some bread, I'll go with an english muffin. It's still more calories than a slice of bread, but it's less than a bagel and tastier too.
