Gah! this is the third night of not being able to sleep. This can't be good. I can't figure it out. Saturday night I didn't sleep at all. I had a 1 1/2 hour cat nap on the sofa sunday afternoon. Sunday night I slept good. I got in my eight hours, but then last night.. only got two hours and tonight once again...can't sleep. I don't understand why. I've been working all day. I should be downright exhausted at this point. I haven't had any extra stimulants or anything either. Had 2 cups of coffee this morning at work because I figured I would need them to get through the day... I resorted to slamming a few beers last night in attempts to make me drowsy. Wish I had some good camamile.

I've been having nights like this as well. I can really only offer you my sympathy . . . my insomnia is mostly a result of getting more exercise and the work schedule I have (although lately because I've been sick, I tend to stay up late into the night and then spend most of the day sleeping). I tend to dose myself with Nyquil when I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping . . . mind you, not overdosing . . . just taking the recommended dose at night when I'm not paricularly feeling ill, just need to get some sleep. I only use it as a last resort, for when I really need to sleep or something will suffer for it the next day. If I'm not so desperate, I brew some Celestial Seasoning's Sleepy Time Tea . . . it does exactly what it says. And it tastes delicious too!
What do you do right before you go to sleep? I tend to try and stick to reading and other non-excitatory activities before I go to bed when I'm serious about going to sleep, and that sometimes helps me when I'm having trouble passing out. I can't play DDR or watch scary movies or anything that activates my mind or metabolism, because that easily keeps me awake longer than I should be.

UJKitten I forgot that I have the celestial seasonings sleepy time tea. *smacks forehead* I could have tried that. As far as a bedtime routiene, I don't have one. Because I work so many stupid hours at this new job I find myself with very little time to get all of my things done. I only get an hour with my son before his bedtime, I have to cater to my 4 pet's needs, make supper, clean up the house, play DDR, check the internet, do laundry, try to get in some sort of art time, spend quality time with my husband or he gets moody, and then try to find the time to wind down...in the space of 4 hours. This being if things GO TO PLAN....which they often don't. I usually sacrifice one thing for another etc etc. Scale constantly tips, to sleep *and granted I LOVE sleeping* only to get up and do it again. You know....I like my new job, but it's really hurting my home life. I think maybe I'm not sleeping because my body want's some quality me time. I'm not sure.

Stress can affect your sleep in a major way.(If your stressed with work and life) Find ways to relieve your stress. I'm sure your husband can help you out with that.

Playing Halo2, or sleeping. He has to go to bed earlier than me. He wakes up for work around 4:30am.

What pets do you have?? (I'm a shameless animal lover . . . I know it's OT but I have a burning desire to know.) ;D If he has to get up so early, does he get off earlier as well? Maybe he could do a little straightening up or start some laundry while you're still at work? Or start dinner? Can't hurt to ask, right? I think sometimes men get a little oblivious when we take on a little more than we can handle and need a little prodding to help out. (Not that you aren't handling it beautifully, but it would be nice to have a little assistance now and again.) I know how hard it is to move a significant other when they are staring vacantly at a screen with their fingers moving on their control pad. It's good that you and he both share a love for video games . . . I can't say the same about me and mine. I let it frustrate me more than I should, I think. UJKitten

well... I've had a two day absence...I crashed out FINALLY! Sleep is soooooo wonderful. ;D ;D
in response to UJK - yes he does get done early. About 1:30pm. *I'm envious* Anyhow....he's having problems adjusting to the reverse rolls. I now work more and make more etc. He is trying....but he's used to me doing it all....so I'm giving him time.

Definitely understandable. It's not easy to learn how to balance work and home when you had the home part of it taken care of beforehand. So you're the breadwinner, eh? Girl Power! (hehehe, jk. ) UJKitten

I have some pretty hefty experience with insomnia. When it happens, i usually take ambien, but its too expensive when you dont have health insurance (like me at the moment) so i discovered valerian tea - chamomile and sleepytime do absolutely nothing for me.
Valerian smells absolutely NASTY, so bad that i wrapped the box of tea bags in plastic wrap and stuck it in a cupboard that rarely gets opened. Otherwise opening the cabinet where it is stinks up the kitchen. You can get the capsule form which i imagine smells less. Despiration will drive you to drink the stuff, which is guaranteed to knock you out.
I'm glad you got some sleep though.

Even though this is rather old, I've been excercising a lot more and I haven't been able to sleep very well. I mean I used to go to sleep around ten and now I just can't go until almost 1 am. I mean that's only a few hours but it makes a big difference. Does my being more active have something to do with it? I'm not really sure...

I had to deal with insomnia my whole life; I just wasn't able to shut my head off. I experienced the opposite problem...I could not get to sleep when I was heavier, but I sleep very well now.
Some part of it may be the time you play or something. When I can't sleep, usually something stressful is going on that I can't get out of my head. With the semester over, I slept like a baby this afternoon, and I should sleep again in a little bit here. I really needed that nap...
The last time I had sleeping problems, I drank an Amp or a Red Bull or something. This is not intuitive, but the "energy" drink made me drowsier than alcohol ever has. I fell asleep when my head hit the pillow. For the next week, I had to struggle to fall asleep...I was dependent after one night!
Anyway, for me to sleep the room has to be cold. I have several ways of getting my mind into a soothing or boring subject to help me calm down. Usually I play memory games with something pointless, like equations I had to memorize from a math class or events of some complicated movie/series/video game/comic book/whatever. I sleep in the same exact position every night so that it has kind of become a "comfort" position. Of course, I stay away from the sugars and caffeine before bedtime, and I definitely don't DDR or otherwise exercise around that time. While it is impossible during the school year, I always try to go to bed at the same time every night (my nap today made this an exception).
As somebody that has dealt with insomnia for my entire life, I am happy about what I have achieved when it comes to sleeping. I would assume these are all pretty common knowledge as far as tips go. Still, they help me sleep.

actually, excersise is given as a reccomendation for people who have insomnia. it may not make you mentally tired, but physical exhaustion is great for sleep. (after rollerblading for 8+ miles i WILL fall asleep the second i get home) Sly is right though, its important to look at when you're excersising. it shouldnt be too close to when youre going to bed. You dont want your heartrate hopping and your blood pumping under the covers (unless someone else is there with you ) i disagree with the energy drink theory (unless you have ADD) caffiene can really mess up peoples circadian rhythms if they're sensitive to it. I know this woman who's bedtime is affected if she has coffee after 3pm...go figure. I'm like sly though, i can have a double expresso and fall asleep no problem...unless its 3am and i have to get up at 6am...

Actually, that was not a theory. I was just describing the odd circumstances of my last major experience with insomnia. I in no way advocate it for use to help sleep. For most people, it would lead to a lower chance of sleep. For me, it caused a dependence. It is evil in either of those cases.
