Hi There, I've been playing DDR for about a month now. I play at the Standard level, however I can only pass about half of the songs. I play in Quest mode so the game is more continuous with shorter 'breaks'.
However, I find my heart rate is not going up as much as I would like it to.
Does anyone have any tips on how I can get a better workout using DDR even though I am not proficient at the Standard level?

Practice, honestly. Go into workout or free play mode (but workout is better because your game does not end after 5 rounds or whatever), and practice on songs you like by trying to do the very best you can on them. Eventually you will find yourself wanting a challenge and that is when you should move on to other standard songs you couldn't pass before.
Depending on what DDR you are playing, I might be able to suggest some songs that you could use to bridge yourself over to the next level of play. For example, if you are playing DDR Supernova 2, I would recommend that in addition to playing your standard songs, you also try to play Britney Spears' "And Then We Kiss" on Expert, because it is "easy" for an Expert song, but still is a challenge for those working on Standard mode...
But really, just practice ^_^ No one starts out on Expert/Heavy mode on DDR when they start playing. But when you start getting As or higher on a song, it's a sign for you to try the next level, or to try a more difficult song on the level you are currently playing. There are a lot of songs where the difference between levels is staggering and you might have to get better playing other songs before you can tackle that one song on a higher level.

Yeah, just keep practicing crazy. I've been practicing also for a month and I'm still on standard, lol.

You could also try to speed up the songs under the settings. Playing Legend of Max on DDR Max/Extreme always gets my heart rate up
