I've actually just heard that doing sprints for about 10-15 mins in a row with little break in between is better than doing around an hour and a half of jogging or running. It was tested in a study done by a college (I can't remember which,) and says that exercises at higher intensities for less time is much more effective than those with low intensities.
IE - 10 200-yard sprints with 20 seconds break > 30 minutes of jogging.

Sport-wise, I'd say wrestling. Too bad those are only 6 minute bouts!

Running is also a fantastic way to ruin your knees and back while you are overweight. They don't tell you that though.
Hooray wrecked joints.
And everything I've been told has said that the Eliptical machine provides the best caloric workout for the amount of resistance on your joints.

sure, but that's now what was asked. But yes, I would strongly suggest elliptical if you have knee problems like I do. That, biking and swimming are what the physical therapist recommended for me.

Running is also a fantastic way to ruin your knees and back while you are overweight. They don't tell you that though. Hill sprints, or sand running are great ways to get running in without injury. With hill sprints, even at your top speed, you are still very low impact on your knees. And sand provides a whole new set of challenges with the unstable surface it presents. Of course, not everybody has access to a beach, or a proper hill.
