I have made a few small changes to the boards. As of this morning, the Personal boards (Getting Personal and Before and Better) are restricted to registered members only. This should serve to provide folks a modicum of privacy in these areas, and should prevent Google caching of the content therein.
But I would like to remind everyone that the Internet is a public place, and people you know may someday find their way here, register, and read your posts. Keep that in mind when you post here (or anywhere, for that matter). The Internet is not a private journal or diary. Other people can and will read what is written. I'm not trying to incite a mass deletion of content, or cause a panic here. I'm just trying to remind people of the realities of the situation.

I know I would have freaked out if someone I knew found their way here too....because GuM is my safe place. I think that's really the issue. I think that's an excellent change and I'm all for it. I respect last night's actions too btw...which is a rarity for anne...I just completely understand those circumstances.

As do I, I'm trying to do what I can to help keep GuM a safe place to people to post, but the reality of the situation is that there's only so much I can do. I just want everyone to go into the situation with their eyes open.

That actually happened to me. I signed up for one of my friends' message boards, trying to trick them into thinking I was somebody else but still leaving them hints as to who I was. But the guy that runs it got all weird and grabbed my IP address ( which I thought he wouldn't have been able to do because he's not that great of a hacker ) and tracked me here to GuM. If he'd had any sense, he'd have found out who I was and read all of my posts, something I don't want my friends doing. So I freaked out. So now I'm glad that I can post my stuff in the picture posts and my journal without google picking it up. Thanks Abrannan  ! |

But the guy that runs it got all weird and grabbed my IP address ( which I thought he wouldn't have been able to do because he's not that great of a hacker ) Just FYI, most Board systems automatically log the IP address of every poster. For example, I have access to the IP address that each post was made from. You don't have to be a hacker to get that. |

For instance, this site is among the top two hits when you search abrannan on google (Along with the other online communities I participate in). So if I know the handle you normally use online, I could find this site that way. |
