My mom and I were talking tonight and she was like oh hey I have a diet for us! And so she handed me a piece of paper, and on it was this diet called the Sacred Heart Medical Diet. I read over it and the first thing that it said was that you could lose " at least 10 and possibly 17 " pounds every week on this diet, and that you could keep doing it as long as you want and it would work. I was thinking WTF?? but not discarding it yet, although I was like... okay that cannot Possibly be healthy. So I saw that there was a website for it and I looked it up and read it thoroughly. It's really odd sounding. And it promises that " the more you eat, the more you'll lose ". My SCAM alarms were flashing in my head at that moment. So I decided that maybe you guys would know something about this. This diet is supposed to be a cleansing diet and healthy, but I've had it hammerred into my head so much that losing anything more than about 2 pounds a week at a steady rate cannot be healthy for you. So I have to wonder, what's up with this diet?? Maybe you guys can give me some insight on it. The website for it is www.idiet4u.com/diets/sacredheart.html.

It's essentially a low-carb, high fiber, semi-crash diet. It wouldn't be that out of the ordinary to lose 10 lbs in a week doing this, but it's not sustainable.

I thought the argument was supposed to be that the stuff you were eating protects your muscles from being eaten as nutrients and that's why you're supposed to eat a lot of the food, so that your muscles are protected.
Note: I haven't read the article yet, but I will come back later tonight or tomorrow and read it, and comment on it most likely.

Your muscles don't get eaten for the nutrients, they are reduced to lower your metabolism as a protection against starving (Your body says, I don't have enough fuel coming in, and I'm burning through my spare fuel (fat), so I have to cut back on how much I burn by getting rid of some of this muscle).
It takes a bit for your body to go into starvation mode, so this diet should be safe for a week. I'd lay off o fit for at least a week between cycles, and you'll probably notice diminishing returns the more you do the diet. Recognize that it is a crash diet, and unless you change your overall eating and activity patterns, all the weight you lose will come right back on again.

I'm not sure I want to do it. Maybe if I hit a plateau and just can't get over it no matter how hard I try I'll do it. Probably not for a while though.

I saw something very, very similar to this on ceruleanbutterfly.com...
IMO, crash diets aren't worth the time you invest in them. You're probably better off with the 2 lbs a week safe method.

I was going to post this last night but my internet went down. so here it is. This is deffinatley not a vegetarian friendly diet. Beef broth and chickennoodle soup, that sound kinda gross like the meatnormus sandwich at burger king, a few of those will kill you in a short span of time lol. Tea is always good to drink they are a great anti oxidant especially green tea. Most fruits and veggies have a negative calorie effect so they are pretty good for you, not to mention all the vitamins and stuff. This is a crash diet if I've ever seen one. A good diet plan is one that you will stick with for the rest of your life. When you diet, you better plan on eating that way for the rest of your life in order to keep off the weight. I will also say that it is okay to splurge once a week, it keeps you from going insane. Don't go over board tho. Thats all I have to say today. WINGS

There is actually very, very little meat in this diet. There is a very tiny amount of chicken in the Lipton soup mix, an amount so small it would probably round off to a 1/8th cup of chicken, if that. The beef broth, while extremely high in sodium, contains no actual meat, just meat flavoring. As for those meatnormous sandwich's from BK... ew. I have nightmares about The King invading my bed and shoving one of those down my throat in my sleep

I mean think about, here is a synopsis you are talking to a friend and you have no idea what a meatnormus is yet You-So uh jane what did you have for breakfest? Jane-A meatnormus. You-What thaaaa You ate what!!! Jane-A meatnormus.
Okay there ya go the name is just wrong. It just sound like nastiness drippings of meat juice and fat. anyways I was just saying that it wasn't veggie friendly thas all. pretty much almost any high protien diet is. A veggie gets protien from nuts and soy mostly, at least I do. WINGS

I did this diet. It works, but it's hella harsh to your body. It got rid of like 12 lbs when I did it, and it helped me get on track.
I don't reccomend it to anyone.

If its 5 days of carbs, then what are you talking about? Have you even read the diet? Its not low anything...its an 'eat all you want' diet. Just stay within the food groups for the certain days of it, thats all. It works far better than anyone on this forum has said, or knows. The website at Idiet has wrong info about the diet itself, and presumes that its bogus because, of the millions of 'Sacred Heart' hospitals, the one they talked to disclaimed the diet. Where were their brains when the journalism degrees were handed out. Anyway, the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, heart group in Allentown, Pa. prescribed this diet in a slightly different, and cleaner, form to a man in his 70's ten years ago for him to lose 20 lbs. before his bypass surgery, and he did. His daughter is a supervisor of a claims unit at Aetna US HealthCare and told the women in her unit about it and they got the diet from her. In 15 months, 20 women had an average weight loss of 60 lbs. and kept it off. They stayed on the diet for two weeks at time, and repeated it whenever they felt ready to. They felt terrific and more energetic. Yeah, the soup can get monotonous at times, but you have a great deal of latitude in your food choices. Grant, I don't know what you did, but it doesn't sound like you did it right... One thing that I noticed about the Sacred Heart soup is the wacky ingredients. No one would use Lipton Onion soup for a diet, its ALL MSG! We use Campbell's Healthy Recipe low sodium Chicken Noodle with real chicken in it. There is NO beef broth. Who dreamt that up? There is no list of spices and condiments added, just veggies and potatoes. The soup actually tastes great. I'll post my version of the diet in the next post and you can try it. Everyone loves it.

Heart Patient Diet- from L.V. Hospital Heart Surgeon
For this diet to be effective…follow the daily plan for 2 consecutive weeks, then take the following week off. You can repeat the cycle for as long as you like or until you achieve your weight loss goal. _____________________________________________________________________________________ SOUP Ingredients made in a 5 qt. crock pot > Soup to be eaten ALL DAY as much and as often as you can 4 - 11oz. cans chicken noodle soup (Campbell Healthy) 5 stalks of celery (diced) 1 lb. pack frozen string beans 4 carrots (diced) 4 potatoes (diced) ½ green pepper (diced) 2 onions (diced) _____________________________________________________________________________________
DRINK 2 LITERS OF WATER EVERYDAY
MONDAY >……………….eat SOUP and all the FRESH FRUIT that you want…nothing else. (no bananas) TUESDAY >……...eat SOUP and all the FRESH VEGETABLES that you want…nothing else. (no corn or beans)

That's a slightly different version than the one I use, but it sounds pretty close. Most likely would work the same.
