Aw, shucks. Mostly it's because I'm a voracious reader, and a fast one to boot. If I discover a potential hobby, the first thing I do is hit google and start searching out good sites on a topic that interests me. I start at the specific item level (like, BMR or target heart rate) and work my way out to the general category level (cardio exercise and it's benefits). I also have a tendency to remember a large portion of what I read. It helps that I read several different viewpoints on a particular topic, because that shows you what's important about a topic. If Person A, B, and C all agree on points, 1, 3, 4, & 6, I know that points 2 & 5 are likely either wrong or unimportant.
I dunno, I just have this undying thirst for knowledge, and a really broad set of interests. I don't go hardcore deep into most of the topics I read about, I'm more of a geek of all trades. Plus, I have this philosophy that every piece of information will be useful in some way at some point.
Also, I hate to ask questions if I can find the answer myself. So, for example, a few months back Mike made a reference on these boards to Parkour. I didn't know what Parkour was, so off to google I go. I find parkour.com and urbanfreeflow.com, and read as much of what they have there, and watch the videos of the techniques. Now, when someone else asks the question "What's Parkour?", I can jump in with my take on the subject, and look like a brilliant person. In reality, though, I'm just a few minutes more experienced on the subject than that person who asked the question.
So yeah, some of what you see is a facade, but most of it is just residue from a lifetime of reading.
