hey everybody! anyone have any advice on jumping higher. And is it possible for a 14 year old to jump four or five feet into the air? I know there are excercies like jumping rope and frog jumps and calf raises but they don't seem to be effective in making me jump any higher. Anyone have any advice on a jumping workout plan?
And also I hurt my wrist pretty badly but im not sure how. It feels like the bone is hurt every time i lift something upwards, like doing an arm curl. except it hurts with anything that weighs more than a few pounds. anyone have any advice for that? Thanks everybody!

Define jump four of five feet in the air, even Michael Jordan only had a 47" vertical leap. Honestly, the best practice for jumping high is to jump high. There's two pieces for any muscle action: Muscle strength and muscle coordination. By jumping high, you're training the coordination piece of it as well as the strength piece. Just by gettign your coordination down properly, you can increase your jump height a few inches. Strength-wise, you need to work on explosive strength. There's a discipline related to this called plyometrics. A fwe google searches for "plyometrics jump height" and the like should turn up a few pages with some exercises. See a doctor. It's what they're for.

I'm pretty sure no person on earth could actually jump 4-5 feet in the air from a standing start. I've seen dancers create the *illusion* of jumping like that by curling their bodies up or having their legs out at 180 degrees at the height of their jump . . . if you are, say, 5 feet tall and you have trained your muscles to jump to a height of 3 feet or so, and you take the bottom 2 - 3 feet of your body and make it higher than that 3 feet, you're jumping 3 feet but it looks like 5-6 feet. Because of the way the human body is constructed, and because we don't have leg muscles like kangaroos or frogs, I doubt a jump of 4-5 feet is possible for most people. As for jump training, I had this site in my personal section of the forum: www.girlscanjump.com/jump-training-techniques.htmlI had this happen to me because I was hoisting trays incorrectly and I gave myself carpal tunnel. It also sounds like you could have damaged the muscles in your wrist, which means you need to be resting them, not exercising them. See a doctor to be sure. UJKitten

thanks everybody! but I think I can clear this up a bit. Approximately how tall do you think is the shortest height to be able to dunk a ball? hmmm... What is the minimum height you should reach before being able to dunk? Thanks again! And no as a 14 year old I do not plan on dunking. I am just wondering. Thanks.

Shortest I've ever heard of was Spud Webb, who won the NBA slam dunk contest one year. He was 5'7". Arms up probably took his reach to around 7', which would require just over a 3' vertical leap. I was chatting with Misery last night and checking out some parkour articles he pointed me to. Here's an article on increasing your jump height. www.urbanfreeflow.com/articles/higher_jump.htm
