Okay, my friends and I have been debating who win in a straight up duel between Darth Sidious and Darth Vader, post-Mustafar.) I vote for Sidious. I mean come on now, his force lightning is insanely powerful, and he didn't lose to Yoda, who was Obi Wan's master, who was Anakin's, (Vader's) master. Plus, Sidious can transfer his state of mind to another being to create endless amounts of Sidious clones, which he only made 3.
Also, it's very clear Sidious was not defeated by Mace Windu, he mearly wanted to see the Traitor of the Republic with his own two eyes.
FINALLY, it's very evident and according to the Sith Lord timeline that Palpatine was actually the apprentice Sith who murdered his master, Darth Plagueis, who could influence the midichlorians.
Sidious was obviously extremely powerful, and people don't give enough credit to a theory that some Star Wars fans created... that Anakin was immaculately conceived (which everyone knows,) by Sidious controllint the midichlorians, birthing Anakin, perhaps forseeing everything that would happen, up until Vader's coming back to the lightside to save his Son.
Hum. Any opinions?

Okay, well I'm going to geek out on you here...
*insert 5 minute animated repeatable clip on me transforming into a giant, hulking, geek*
First off, I'm only going to consider the six movies as official canon, ignoring anything from animated series, books, graphic novels, or chat-room fantasies (So out with the Sidious clones).
Now, the Mustafar incident greatly dimished Anakin's mobility, taking away one of his greatest abilities. In the 18-ish years between Ep III and Ep IV, he learned to make up for this with force telekenisis abilities, but is still a shadow of his former self. Fortunately, Obi-Wan managed to age 35 years in those 18 years, so he was similarly hampered in their battle aboard the Death Star. My point is that Anakin/Vader's strength lies in tactical ability/reaction speed. Strategy is obviously not his strong suit, as evidenced by his attacks on the rebel alliance in Episodes IV and V.
Palpatine, on the other hand, is a master of strategy. The trap that nearly destroyed the Rebel alliance at Endor, the subtle political machinations of Ep I, II and III to bring about the birth of the Empire, even the choice of battlegrounds to face Yoda (and the subsequent gaining of high ground to offset any TK-ability deficiencies against Yoda). He was even willing to take a gamble and put his life on the line, betting (correctly) that Anakin would intervene in his arrest. His only flaw came from having an apprentice for so long that he began to place too much faith in Vader. He trusted Vader in Ep. V when Vader said that Luke could be turned, and he trusted Vader to stand idly by while he killed his son on Ep VI. It was that faith that became his undoing.
But that doesn't answer your question...
Straight up Duel Palpatine v. Skywalker? If it's a spur of the moment thing, have to give Vader the nod at a tactical level. But Palpatine couldn't be allowed to see the fight coming. Given any notion that a duel would be occurring, Master P would be able to pre-set the situation to his advantage enough to overcome his tactical deficiencies (probably through the addition of extra parties in the battle, as is his M.O.), and would mop the floor with Vader.

I guess I can see where exactly you're coming from. I suppose that without all the 'what if's,' and 'could-do's,' i.e. the wealth of unamiginable power hinted at Sidious inheriting from his dead master, Vader could win. However, if all the myth was true, and including all the books 'n stuff, Sidious [IMO] would win. But Darth Maul is still the sweetest. Yes, I do have his double-bladed lightsaber in my car.
