I started thinking about it and my idea is maybe i Should start leaving a lil bit of food on my plate all the time. this will make me start eating less but still getting full.

If you can do it, great. Some people (namely me) have a hard time leaving food on our plates, but can get away with taking less food to begin with. Every person has to find their own tricks and tweaks that work for them. You just have to watch out to make sure you aren't bypassing your tricks. For example, I have to watch my initial portion size to make mine work. You should do the same, and make sure you aren't taking an extra large portion because you know you aren't going to eat it all.

I couldn't agree more. I've started to take smaller portions. To me it is very difficult to leave food on my plate for 1 reason, it makes me think of waste and I can not throw away food knowing there are people that would give anything to be able to eat what I am throwing away. Therefore, I often finish what my wife couldn't, pizza crust etc. Now I simply take less knowing I can get more if she decides to eat her crust this day

If you cook for others, this is another tip -- Leave the food on the stove and serve your plate (small portions!) from the stove. Do not put the food in serving dishes at the table, where it is too easy to help yourself to 2nds and 3rds!
Then if I have the urge to get up and go for seconds at the stove, I just take a detour to the dishwasher instead and get rid of my plate!
