hey, i'm new to the board and new to ddr as well. i finally got tired of being flabby and gross (145 pounds and a mere 5'4"). so when i saw tanya's story on G4 i was totally motivated and went out and bought the game and pad for my ps2. the problem is, i'm a really negative person and get discouraged easily. i get so frustrated that i can only do the light dance steps and feel as though i'm not doing enough to lose any weight (i'll play anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour about 3-5 times a week). my question is, will playing light mode, until i get better, be significant enough to help me out? i dont wanna give up, and dont plan to, cuz ddr is crazy fun, but with a busy schedule, i feel as though i'm never gonna get any better. anyhoosie, if anyone has an comments, i would love to hear them!

i think i should maybe clarify...i guess what i really want to know is, how long did it take some of y'all (after regularly playing) to advance to a more difficult mode?

Playing even on light mode is okay, and certainly better than not doing anything at all. ;D I can tell you that when I started playing, I stuck on Beginner mode for about six weeks there, and only after I'd felt comfortable moving on to Light mode.
What's important is that you keep at it, and don't be discouraged if you can't "pass catas" or whatever else the hardcore DDR players might try to tell you are the real markers on whether or not you're any good. Just keep playing, no matter if you don't think you're that good a player, and above all try to have fun with it, and don't let yourself get discouraged if you're not technically that proficient. What's important is you keep trying, and who knows, your skills may improve vastly. And even if they don't, well, you're still going to lose a lot of weight trying.

Back in my day when I started there was no Beginner mode. We had Basic =P lol. I started out on Basic (aka Light) for about a month. THen after beating paranoia (first one) I learned that you can actually use a code (yes people... a code not just down down or hold start) to unlock trick. I didn't really paly on trick however... Just went right to maniac (started with real easy ones) So it took me about a month to get to maniac. and it took me 2 years to get to a 10 lol

Hey, I've been a beginner since I started 6 weeks ago, and I'm STILL a beginner. But heck, I'm in alot better shape now. My back is stronger, (no aches after driving a long time) my legs are stronger, (I can run up the stairs again) my skin is healthier, and I've lost 15lbs.
Actually, I don't really care if I ever do 9 footers, I'm just having fun.

I started playing the day after Thanksgiving...I just recently (probably beginning of March) started to do Standard songs, so when you look at it it was about 3 months before I stepped it up a bit. When you do light songs for a while, when you bump it up to standard, you will see the arrows better! Right now I fluctuate between standard and heavy...there are still some light songs that I cannot pass for example Maxx Unlimited, that always kicks my butt!! In other words, don't worry about getting to standard too quickly...it took me 12 weeks!

hey guys, thanks for all the input! since i posted, i've been trying to play everyday whenever i have free time, instead of watching tv or playing my other games. i feel like i'm building my stamina, and the other day i had no shame when i played in front of some ppl at the mall. (despite the fact that i was in sandals and a skirt, i think i did pretty well anyway, thanks for the support!

I've been playing for about 8 months now~~... I've been playing daily for about 3 months... I never bothered with begginer mode (it wasn't in DDR Max), so I went straight to light. After about 2 months, I bumped up to standard, and after 4 more, I was playing in heavy. I still have trouble with the harder songs in heavy, so I'm still trying to get the hang of it. But I have noticed that I burn more calories faster on the harder songs.
OMG, I've noticed that we are in the same proverbial boat!! I weigh 143 and am 4' 5" tall! (I used to weigh 160... I lost 17 pounds since I started playing daily!) Go amyleejr84!!! XD *cheers*

Definately. I don't like girls who are 100 pounds and think they're fat. Or girls with rib cages showing. Ewwwwww

About the food thing........ I tried to change my attitude about what I ate. I tell myself not to finish every last crumb, that if I'm really hungry I can eat anything I want. But.... I have to be 'hungry', not bored. Well, that kind of works, but I have had a tough time throwing the last couple of bites of ANYTHING away. Oh, I also try to think of food as 'fuel', and choose what I eat accordingly. We all know what foods are good and which are bad. I started cutting back on the junk food before DDR but wasn't getting to my goal fast enough, so I started excercising. I'm 5'2" and 2 months ago weighed 145lbs. Now I'm down to 128lbs. and am feeling better than I have in a long time. Our county's 'Health-O-Rama' is Friday and I can't wait to go and find out how fit and healthy I am.
