Hi everyone, I just joined this forum. Alot of my friends play DDR but I never really got into it, until recently I tried it at a friends house and had a great time doing it. I've also been wanting to lose weight for a long time and I realized that DDR might be a great place to start, since I usually get very addicted to games and play them for hours on end, it might be a good way to get excercise in a fun way.
The problem is I don't have any game consoles, and I don't want to get one just to play DDR on. I was worried until I found out thier is a PC version of the game. I still don't have a pad or the software, because I'm not sure what to get. Does the PC version of DDR have a workout mode like on the PS2 version? are their any differences I should know about? Just general advice? So if someone could please help me out I would appreciate it.
(I apologize in advance to the moderators if this post is too vague or in the wrong forum)

The PC version you refer to is called Stepmania. I do not believe there is a workout mode for stepmania, and - from what I have played of stepmania - it's a program that is designed for advanced players. Hard songs are made harder by individuals who create new stepcharts. New songs are added which are usually more crazy stepcharts. I mean if anyone out there plays stepmania on a beginner level, please say I'm wrong. But from what I have played based on personal experiance I found it to be advanced. It's not an official game. If you want the real deal, you will have to resort to a console version.

I personally know that with a lot of (illegal) searching you can find all the songs and steps from all the console and arcade versions for stepmania. I know its not good, but they are all out there, just like every other game and movie. I dont recommend getting all of them, I have them all because I go to a tech school and there is soooo much illegal computer stuff that it just doesnt matter. I am a fan of stepmania... but it really cant compare to a console version IMO. oh you can get stepmania at www.stepmania.com

Thanks guys, but I wasn't reffering to stepmania. I think their is some kind of official Konami PC version. I found this at their website: www.konami.com/gs/gameinfo.php?id=24&pid=4 I don't know, I could be wrong.

I believe In The Groove has a PC version or is about to release a PC version.

I've just started with Stepmania. I found 1000+ songs from the DDR games on various bittorrent trackers. Generally speaking, they have the beginner level stepcharts as well.
Besides those, the ones you can get just by following links from stepmania.com have beginner level step charts as well. The 7 winners of the StepMix contest have them, for example.
As for the hardware, you can get a dance pad off of eBay for very, very cheap. Just search for USB and then check it against the reviews on stepmania.com.
