Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this, I had to let the problem percolate in my head a bit. From what I've been able to decipher from your post, you've got a situation where the adapter only seems to recognize one controller plugged into it, yes? When the P1 side is the onyl one plugged in, it recognizes one controller, but then both P1 and P2 are plugged in, only P2 is recognized, correct?
Questions, are you checking this in Stepmania or in the game controllers control panel option? When both sides are plugged in, which one is plugged in first? When only P1 is plugged in, what controller ID is it assigned (from control panel). When both are plugged in, what IDs are assigned to which side?

your fist paragraph is correct except if i plug p2 in it doesnt work, p1 still does. its not a prob with stepmania is a problem with the drivers. only 1 controller will be in the joystick and it wont let me add another(maby im doning it wrong) sometimes removing it from device manager then replugging it in will make it recogise 2 controllers, but not always.

Shouldn't be a driver issue, as the SDB just uses the standard HID (Human Interface Device) USB drivers, IIRC. I can only say shouldn't, though, 'cause I can always be wrong. Sounds like between this and the other problem you're having with it dropping out of dance mode, that you may have some bad hardware in your SDB.
