A USB converter. Make sure it is compatible with dance pads. Normal ones do not allow pressing up and down at the same time. I use the Redoctane one, but there are others.

does any one know howto mod a cf so you can play piu with it? You need to remove the cover of the center button. Your USB adapter should be able to pick that up as a button, which you just set into StepMania as your controls.

SmartJoy PLUS on Lik-Sang.com. Never had problems with them. I've tried the RedOctane converter but for some reason I just don't like it.

Note: you can find the SMart joy on domeestic sites, rather than ordering through Lik-sang and having to pay the enormous shipping and customs delay.

I've never had a moment's trouble with my Red Octane adapter.

The most common problem you will have with adapters is that they are analog, not digital. The idea is that your arrows are being treated as directions on a joystick, not as individual buttons. This is known as "Mapping to the Axes" instead of "Mapping to the buttons". I can get into more detail, but the short-and-sweet problem is that up/down and left/right cannot be hit at the same time. If your adapter exhibits these problems, and there is no way to change it to a digital mode, then your adapter will not work with stepmania. I personally do not use a USB adapter. I built an LPT (printer port) adapter using DirectPadPro (or NTPad for you XP or 2000 users). This link is not accessible via stepmania's website. The links are all broken, but found their USB Adapter Guide. This is a comprehensive list by Stepmania's staff on which adapters work and which do not with Stepmania. This will hopefully solve your problems in terms of what to buy and what to avoid. www.stepmania.com/stepmania/adapter.phpYou know what's nice, though, once you have an adapter working, no matter whether or not it works with stepmania, you can now play any computer game using your playstation controllers! Yay!
