You have a couple of ways to go:
1. Fliptop converter + swap magic discs, fairly inexpensive (~$50), you have disassemble part of your PS2
2. Swap magic + slide card, even cheaper, but can damage your PS2.
3. HDloader + network adapter + hard drive + USB drive cage. This is the most expensive ( ~$150-200) and difficult option to pull off. You transfer the game images to the hard drive on your PC, then install the hard drive into the PS2 and play games via HDloader (Which is out of production now)

Both HDLoader and HDAdvance allow you to rip the PS2 disc directly from the console to the hard drive in the PS2. The only times you need to have a separate PC are when the game simply won't work with a normal rip (DDR Party Collection comes to mind) or when you're adding games that you've downloaded. Of the compatible games that I have, only Party Collection required me to rip it first onto my PC and then copy it to the hard drive. While HDLoader is hard to find, HDAdvance is fairly common and has all the same functionality.

To clarify the clarification, yes you don't have to transfer via PC, but the DVD drive in the PS2 is so slow that it'll take 30 minutes to do the transfer by PS2 as opposed to 2-3 minutes by PC.
