Ok... You know that error if you use a japanese game and the mod chip wont let it run. It's like... a no smoking kinda symbol in the background and it says something like... the CD wont work blah blah call this number *******. Well... even with a Japanese PS2 My 5th mix still doesnt work... Did I just get a defective game? Or did I get screwed over?

Nope, 5th mix is just the biggest pain in the butt. PSX Exchange discs don't work, my American PS1/PS2 can't fake it, even my friend's mod chipped one won't. What I *did* find that worked was my original PS1 (old style, with serial port) and a Game Converter (plugs into the serial port). This alone wouldn't work; simply swapping discs still causes the modchip NO to appear. I needed to add a game code as well and load it as a "cheat" to bypass the protection. You might be able to get by with a Game Shark, since that's the code I used.
I can't find the code on my computer right now, but I can transcribe it off my Game Converter if anyone wants it.
Even with the code, sometimes it still comes up, I think it is when the spring that presses the PS door open detection button slips when closing the lid.

I use the PS Exchange 2 disc & have to put in the code in my American PS1 (I have the bigger ps1, not the little one) - then it works fine. I love 5th mix. The little spring thingy that would keep it from resetting when I closed the cover wasn't working as well, so I usually just keep the cover open (though that spring thingy still has to be in place). I haven't even tried it on a PS2 since I just have an American unmodified PS2.

Even with a Japanese PS2? That sounds strange. I should try my copy of 5th mix on my Japanese PS2. I've been playing it on the Japanese PSone. I haven't had any problems what so ever. I'll try it on the PS2 and give you a more definite answer on if it's your copy of 5th mix.

I've tried my copy of 5th mix on my Japanese PS2 and it works fine. I didn't get that protection error at all. The only problem I had was when I tried to use the memory card and the game froze, but I'm pretty sure it's the memory card since it's acting funny anyway. The only thing I could suggest to you is to see if you have any enhancing options activated for PSone games. Check it out by booting the PS2, hit triangle, highlight PlayStation Driver, hit triangle, and make sure they all say standard. Looking at this process made me think of something else. My PlayStation Driver is version 1.02. Check it with yours and see if maybe the playstation driver may be too old for 5th mix. I'm not sure if this could be the problem or not, but it's a possiblility. They obviously must have upgraded the drivers for some reasons. If you have a different driver version, check to see if there are some boards out there that have figured out the differences between versions. Hope this helps you out.

You're probably better off picking up a modded PS1, the chips are cheap now, as are the PS1s. Even paying installation fees to have somebody else solder four wires for you, you'll probably pay less than an imported system.
